Best Mil-Surp Rifle?

K31 with a MOJO peep sight. Fast, inexpensive (except ammo) and accurate. A tad heavy tho, but that's true of most milsurps.

I was thinking carcano or arisaka for light and handy, but i really like the idea of the enfield jungle carbine, smoothest bolt ever made, and a 10 round mag. plus a milder kicking round, than your other 762 types.

I just finished putting my Yugo M24/47 in a new stock. It looks really nice with the sporter stock.

The rifle cost $90 and the stock was something like $80. When I have the time and money, it'll be a pig rifle.

My arisaka type 99 is over 9 lbs. It's not light or "handy". In fact it's longer than my 91/30. Go with an m38 or m44 they're cheap, ammo is cheap, and cosmoline and I won't say much if you "sporterize":barf: it.

Theres always the shorter Arisaki 99s that only weigh just over 8ibs and is 5 inches shorter.

My wife's uncle lets me use his type 44 carbine and I am in line to inherit it. Lovely nice little carbine he picked up of Mount Suribachi one night when he was returning from foward observation. Has the hooked bayonet catcher on there too. Weighs in at 7.2ibs which is fairly low considering most ww2 rifles and the calibre it fires and is only 38 inches long and that or the type 38 Arisaki would work very well for what you want.

I already have a short type 99 Arisaki brought back by my father in law. Its not too bad size wise, but I find the No5 Lee Enfield nicer.

+1 on the #5. The huge aperture is pretty darn good for snap shooting. But my heart still belongs to my little TS. That wide V rear, and blade front make snap shooting, "a snap."

Mil-Surp Hunter

I prefer either a shortened Enfield (either .303 or 2A1 .7.62X51), mauser or If you can find one a Spanish FR-8.

I have scouted both a Spanish Mauser and an Enfield 2A1 (both in 7.62X51) for this purpose and both peerformed wonderfully, with the Enfield having the better bolt throw. The mauser is lighter, but the bolt needs some work.

The Spanish FR-8 is perfect as is, and all you need is a session at the range to get used to the funky sight. Slower bolt than an Enfield, but short and fast and suprisingly accurate with standard handloads .

Dang, I forgot about the FR-8. There is a V notch rear on that funky disc they call a rear sight. Maybe I'll have to haul that thing out of the dusty recesses of the safe now.

I though I was the only one that likes the Steyr 95. It probably isn't as nice as my K31, but I'm facinated by mine and though I've got a couple of hundred rounds of mil-surp and have been trying hard not to get another set of dies, etc.....Seems it would be great it the deer woods...Essex

1) Yugo SKS. It's cheap with the fastest follow up shot, but w/ a grenade launcher a bit long.

2) Mosin m38 or m44. Cheapest, light and handy, and the fireball will cook them right up. (nobody's mentioned this umm...feature:evil: )

3) Mauser: usually cheap, faster bolt action than a Mosin. Might be a little bit long too.
