Which would be better for GENERAL PURPOSE self defense, 2 rounds of 30 grain @ 1500FPS (22 caliber) or any single 380 round? Obviously neither are ideal, but if these were your only two choices, which would you take

Since the only way you are gonna get 1500fps from a .22 is from a rifle, I'd take the .22. Much rather pick 'em off before they get close enough for the .380!

Out of .380 sized handguns its more like 3 .22lr = 1 .380/38Special.

--wally.

Depends on how fast and how accurate you can put either of those calibers on target, placement.

I can empty an entire .22 magazine on target in the time it takes me to 3 rounds of .380 on target.

So it all dependso on you I suppose. But under the conditions you asked. I'd go with the single .380 HP defensive round.

I would pick the .380 acp any day of the week.

I carry mine with FMJ (no JHP here in Peru) and they offer greater penetration that the .22 lr round.

Also I have much more confidence in a .380 JHP striking and taking out vital organs than in a .22

30gr @ 1300fps is achievable in a NAA Black Widow. The longer barreled Mini Master pushes 100fps faster than that. These are CCI Maxi Mag +V loads.

I've been debating this myself, I think the cuteness factor, and the fact that I don't have a .22, means I'll get a Black Widow instead of a .380.

I was thinking of the Aguila 22 ammo. Aguila lists it at 1750fps but that obviously must be out of a long barrel. I'm not sure how much slower it would be out of a shorter pistol length barrel.

As for pure discussion of stopping power or OSS etc, I'd feel more comfortable with a 380 with defensive rounds than a 22LR. But a lot of times we aren't going to be talking about similar guns. The NAA guns are itty bitty tiny and can go where even a P3AT might not be able to. I think the NAA guns back good backup to your backup guns.

What it comes down to is if I were in a dark remote area and there was someone there that seemed to want to do me harm, I'd have more faith in the P3AT loaded with CorBons than in an NAA revolver loaded with anything.

Well, if we're talking about .22 LR, I'd go with the .380 for sure (assuming it's reliable).

.22 WMR is considerably more "powerful" than .22 LR, so that would make the choice a bit harder.

Oh, FYI, you arn't going to get 1,500 FPS from a .22 LR handgun...

One question for you guys....would you give the same answers if all you could shoot was FMj for the .380 acp??No uber ammo...just plain standard velocity 95 grain bullets....would you still choose the .380 acp over 2 or 3 .22's from a 5" barrel???
