Better grips for reducing recoil: Paychmayr Decelerator or Hogue Tamer?

I have a 1999 SW 629 .44 mag round butt and want to get new grips for it as mine are 20 years old. Some have said that after many years rubber loses some of it's recoil absorption properties which makes sense as rubber does break down over time.

I also have very small hands but the current grips do feel thin to me so perhaps a fuller grip will help also.

I'm looking at the Hogue Tamer grips and Pachmayr Decelerator grips (Pachmayr told me the Decelerator has better recoil reduction than their new Diamond Pro grips).

Which one of these grips is better at recoil reduction?

The only thing I can add in here is I have the Hogue Tamer on a .454 Super Redhawk and it does a fantastic job of absorbing the recoil of full power heavy bullet loads. There is some sort of rubberized insert in this grip at the area of the web of the hand and I can "feel" it compress under recoil, which in turn helps absorb the rearward thrust of the handgun. A DA style grip frame tends to push back into the hand then torque the wrist upward, so this model grip is a great aid to manage all that thrust.

Based on experience I will warn to watch the grips that are narrower and/or have more swell in the palm.

I had the Pachmayr Grippers and didn't like them on the M29. They were to narrow and concentrated the recoil into the palm. I much preferred the OEM Wood Target Grips which were wider and.spread out the recoil.

If you’re willing to spend a little money, wood grips that actually fit you can be just as comfortable and sometimes less abrasive than rubber grips

the X Frame grip fits the N frame.

That's what the Smith and Wesson rep said. But it also says square butt and mine has a round butt.

If I go the Hogue Tamer route I want the ones that come standard on the current 629, not the ones you can order from the S&W store which appear to be different.

well that's lousy of them. their gigantic grips are not going to fit on their own square butt guns.

I'd have to go with the Hogue Tamer's...only because I shot them more on my LCR'S . I have a set of Pachmayr Diamond Pro's on my SP101 that are pretty comfortable too.

I got Pachmyer “Gripper Decelerator” grips for my M28 square butt and I love them. They feel squishy and flimsy but they work great for me. Everyone feels recoil differently and everyone’s hands are different so YMMV. Can’t find a pair for the round butt N frame on Midway though.

i have houge tamer grips on my Ruger SRH. I let another range regular shoot it and he was very surprised at how well it soaked up the recoil. there's an almost gel like consistency in the part of the grip where the web is. so much more comfortable to shoot than his M29.

I do believe that the factory rubber grips on Smith & Wesson revolvers are all made by Uncle Mike’s. I have no solid proof of that only snippets of information that I have found.

The round frame “square butt conversion grips” moniker causes confusion. They should explain better but they are round frame grips made to make it look like the gun is a square frame.

I hope that helps.

I have the same Hogue Tamer grips on my 44Mag and 460Mag and they allow me to shoot both quite managebly, even with hot loads. I have Pachmyer grips on smaller calibers so I can't really make an apples to apples comparison, but the fit and finish of the Hogue grips are superior.

i have tried both you have mention ,
PACHMEYER DIAMOND PRO, work best for me on myS@W 627 ,it recoils in my hand softer than both of those you mention , i think they are a little more wider in the middle of grip spreading recoil wider in hand. and deffently softer ,further down back of grip than the hogue tamer ,your milage may very

Everyone's anatomy is different. The Hogue X Frames work best for me. The Pachy Decelerators are too narrow at the top and hammer the web of my hand. The Diamond pros, in addition to hammering the web of my hand allow my middle middle knuckle to impact the back of the trigger guard.

Long ago, I had a set of Herrett Jordan Troupers on a K Frame -- even though they were made to fit a drawing of my hand, I never could get used to them.

The X Frame Hogues fit all current K, L, N, X frame ROUND BUTT S&Ws.

What works for me, may or may not work for you.

Paul

Thanks.

I did a little research and it seems that Uncle Mike's no longer makes pistol grips?

I have to agree with most others above the Hogue Tamers are great. I have them on both my SRH in 44 and 454 and they do the job better than I had hoped.

Neither. Both are not very good.

Get some Herretts Stocks Jordan Troopers. Bill Jordan talks about these in "No Second Place Winner". The short of it is: They're made for your hand, redirect recoil down out of the palm and let you rapid fire or manage slow fire with very heavy loads. I will use nothing else on my revolvers.
