Sorry - screwed this one up first time around!

I know there are figures published ..... some were posted not so long ago but .. looking purely at opinion, where and how do you reckon most BG's aquire their shooters??

I am of the opinion, as are most of us I think . .. that guns will always be available to those seaking them, however much we legit people might be restricted. But tell that to the ''anti's''!

I personally reckon that many more get smuggled in than agencies would like to admit... and that certainly seems the case in Europe ... many coming from ''Eastern Block'' counties.

There might be some ''blurring'' between the categories I have listed ... inevitably.

My 1/50th of $1:

I take it that "Black Market" could be just about any illegal means, other than say smuggling in from Mexico/Canada/any sea or air terminal.

That includes those stolen and resold, or bought from family/friends, even though the buyers are legally disquailifed.

So, I vote "Black Market"

John at Castle Argghhh! just addressed exactly this problem:

From the Bureau of Justice Statistics :

Offenders
According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from -

-a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
-a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
-family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%

And here's the link where he got the data:

Thx Roger .... yeah I think that is about what I remembered for the ''official'' breakdown. But was interested also to see what individuals felt were the common ''channels'' of access. I think the poll reflects most people's thinking.

You have some nice pics on your site ... I only fly R/C .... feet on the ground. !:)

There is no such thing as a "black market" for firearms in the US (except anything that is illegal to own without a permit, like a full auto).
:banghead:
If you have a gun, and sell it to someone in a private transaction that is what the gun grabbers consider to be the "black market".
BTW, I voted theft.

Theft? Unlikely in my opinion. At least in my country.

According to estimates of the German equivalent of the FBI, there are about 10,000,000 legal firearms in Germany and 20,000,000 illegal ones. A few hundred legal ones are stolen every year.
At a rate of, say, even 1,000 per year it would take 200 years to rise the number of illegal guns by just one percent.
No, I think it's more likely that the guns are leftovers from the last war, have been smuggled in from abroad or have been sold by Russian soldiers before they left East Germany.

Atc1man .... what I was meaning by ''Black Market'' was basically firearms commerce run by felons, for felons! Not law abiding people.

They ''aquire'' pieces from wherever ... theft and import smuggling would be in that category ... so sales would be strictly '' under the counter''. That's why there is overlap between categories.
