In advance of the Giffords gun forum in Las Vegas, Joe Biden has announced his gun plan, which he touts as more "moderate" than those of his rivals.

The highlight of the plan is that owners of "assault weapons" would be given a choice: either turn in their guns (for compensation) OR register them under the National Firearms Act.

The main reason this won't fly is that, thanks to Beto O'Rourke's honesty, everybody now knows that registration is the precursor to confiscation. Therefore you would get a very low rate of compliance.

Beyond that, NFA registration is simply impractical. The number of AR-15's, etc., is exponentially greater than those of machine guns, SBR's, etc. You would need an exponential increase in ATF staffing. And approvals for transfers would take years. This would effectively freeze the guns with their current owners. (That's assuming that there was compliance.) Sen. Feinstein considered such a plan in 2013, and rejected it.

Biden can tout whatever he wants, this is not moderate in any way and has nothing to do with assault weapons which AR15's are not. It is an infringement on the RTKBA and an increase in the size and power of government.
Anyone so ignorant as to not understand the purpose of registration prior to O'Rourke's statements probably never will.

This from the man who's idea of defending your home is standing on your front porch and firing a couple of rounds from your shotgun in the air. I'm pretty sure my neighbors would object to that.

The Dems have a problem. For years they denied wanting to do away with private gun ownership. The cat's out of the bag as they've announced that's their intention. If they backpedal they lose their base. If they stay with that goal they lose a significant part of the country. Biden's trying to play both sides.

That’s even better for them.

If you didn’t register a machinegun when you could, that just makes you a felon now and they can take away all of your firearms.

The same would be the same for any future laws. Declare, destroy or become a criminal, simple.

That's more or less what CA just did.

It wasn't impractical at all. It was simple*.

They built a website and told people to do it online or become felons.

* The Web site crashed numerous times and there was/is litigation about that.

Simple fix to that is to have faceplant/foogle/flamamazon build the website.

I agree with you on "The main reason this won't fly is that, thanks to Beto O'Rourke's honesty, ..."
