I almost forgot to post this even though it blew my mind.
A couple weeks ago I went to Water and Wings range in PA to shoot my 308 handloads at 500 yards. We arrived and while we were inside signing in I could hear a rifle being discharged out side. It had an enormous percussive effect on the building and I said to my friend that it had to be a 50 cal.
Lo and behold there was a Griffin style 50 cal on the line being manned by a, no joke, 82 year old man. The gentleman was rather large in diameter and had to drive his car up to the targets but he was a beast on the 50 with a permagrin.
The point this rambling post arrived after he got his 50 zeroed.
I was talking to him for a bit and after he showed me his .90 caliber cartridge( a wildcatted 20mm) he showed me his pistol.
It was a scoped bolt action handgun. He said he uses it for deer and groundhogs.
243 or 7-08 one might think, nahhhh, how bout a 458 Win mag.
He showed me his handloads a 250 grain hollow point for groundhogs and the 300 grain softpoint for deer. I was floored.
I've heard that the recoil on a 454 Casull is not for the light hearted and a 45-70 handgun is no pussycat either.
I had a rather hard time concentrating on my shooting while he was there because a: it was amazing to watch and 82 year old shooting a handgun that, when lit off recoiled over his left shoulder from the bench and b: it was so absurdly loud we couldn't keep our concentration.
He told me he was on his fourth barrel on that gun. I doubt I'd have much dexterity left after that kind of abuse. Does anyone else have a hand cannon of this magnitude? Is this a common choice of handgun calibers?

Yeah the 90 cal was a turned brass bullet in a shortened necked down 20mm case. I think he said the bullet was over 2000 grains.
He also casts solid lead ones but they foul the barrel too much.

Ah, "Dynamite Dan." He's known for his, shall we say, BIG toys. :what: I ran into him the last time I was at W&W, a few weeks ago.

He also used to shoot (maybe still does) at Lower Providence Rod & Gun Club in Audobun, PA.

Seriously - I wanna see a .90 caliber rifle. That would make the 4-bore shennaningans over on the rifle forum look like a sparkler contest.

A "true" 4-bore runs a little over an inch in diameter, most made were somewhere around .950" (actually 5-bore size).

The annual Linebaugh seminar just finished, and while the emphasis is on big-bore handguns, check out these pictures with a few of the rifles that showed up.

He used to shoot at LPRGC. He was there one day shooting some wildcat revolver. It was the first time he shot it. BANG, the handgun recoiled, hit him in the head and knocked him out. He came to about 20 seconds later said, "I think that's enough for today." and went home.

The man is a legend.

Quick, someone call John Woo ! We have someone for one of his films. Too funny. I'd never heard of someone who obviously has to pack pain relievers along with his ammo -- "here's a 4-bore round and that there's the aspirin that goes with it."

The article on the .500 Maximum in American Handgunner's last issue was a good one.
Shooting it made him physically sick.:)

I was looking at an article once, not sure where it was, about some old timer shooting a 4 gauge on a bench rest. Every shot the rifle would knock him over and onto his butt.

It can't be the same guy, because he was pretty old back when the article was written, or when the photos were taken.
