When I built a 9mm AR pistol last year I had the idea of putting a binary trigger in it in the future, but now I have the itch to put a binary trigger in a .22 LR AR instead as the only use would be for range fun and .22 is cheaper than 9mm.

This has me wondering whether a CMMG conversion is better than a dedicated .22 LR upper. Are dedicated .22 uppers and barrels more accurate and trouble free than a CMMG conversion? I can get the CMMG conversion w/ 3 mags for $100 less than a dedicated upper that comes with no mags.

Gave it some more thought, I think the CMMG conversion is the way to go given it comes with mags and will cost something close to $150 less. For 25 to 50 yards at the range and using a binary trigger, accuracy isn't going to be critical.

The conversion south the chamber adaptor is precise enough. Until it isn't. When the chamber adaptor leads up, groups at 25 yards will go from inches to feet.

PSA has dedicated 22LR uppers for a reasonable price. We're awaiting delivery of a 8.5 upper. $280 with free shipping.

First the twist in most 5.56 barrels is going to be on the fast side for 22 LR leading could be a problem and accuracy isn't going to be as good as a dedicated 22 upper with a proper 1 in 16" twist.
Second not sure what trigger you plan on using but the Fostech Echo 2 won't work with 9mm and 22 bolts.

If he’s going with a binary trigger, I don’t think accuracy is going to be a high priority on his list. I think he’ll be going for the fun factor.

That and to scare people at the range thinking I made a machine gun.

@MistWolf made a good point tho about the adapter cruding up the chamber with lead and carbon and mavracer made a good point about leading the bore of the 5.56 barrel.

I may just go dedicated .22 LR upper after all.

This is all potential stuff if I ever get the guts to plunk money down on a binary trigger. I just wanted to get my ducks in a row and really think about which way is the better way to go.

I have a binary trigger that was just about given to me. The guy wanted to tread it for a standard AR fire control group. He said that it was costing him too much to shoot his gun.
I have it in a 5.5 pistol build right now, but will most likely give it to a friend that likes binary triggers.

leading? shoot only copper plated. :D

As for binary and CMMG, I have it on good authority that the BFSIII will work with the CMMG kit, but the bolt is slow enough it's easy to overrun the trigger, so keep that in mind.

Got the 22 cal. Dpms heavy barrel dedicated upper and switch to any of my lowers, a tad heavy but I will flute it.
Accuracy so much than expected with a crappy trigger, good ammo and trigger 1/2 " at 25 yards.

I went with a dedicated .22 upper both time (Me, then later the wife), and am glad I did.

One is a CMMG upper and it functions and shoots very well. She's deadly with it.
