Hey all, just wondered if anyone had any good recommendations for a set of small cheap binoculars to toss in the range bag. They'll be used at an indoor 25 yard range so they don't need to be super high anti fog quality. I just can't see .22 holes at 10-25 yards!

Just go to any one of the XXX-Marts and you can get a cheap pair there to use. I got a 14 x 70 set of el-cheapo binoculars at a gun show for $35.00. I take them to the range and they work pretty good. They live in the back of my Jeep.

At the 25 yard point, I use shoot n' sees and a pair of $10 binoculars I found at a sporting goods clearance table...Beyond that, I'd recommend looking for a nice spotting scope :D

most ranges let you rent a spotting scope

for a buck or two.

I found a good pair of binoculars (used) at a gun show for 15!

flea market , gun show , someone who has a set they never use , garage sale

Never pay full price.

The corollary to that is "MSRP rarely represents the actual full price of an item."

Be careful with Big 5's "regularly priced" tag. You'd be hard pressed to find any Tasco 20-60x60 spotting scope, like the one on special this week, anywhere over $150, let alone $250.

Back to the original poster's question. At that kind of range, I think you'd be ok with just about any set of binoculars. You might not be happy with the standard $10 "made in China" binos you find everywhere, but for what you are talking about, I'm sure you could easily find a pair for under $30 what would work fine. I don't think there are many differences beteween brands (if they even have a brand name)when it comes to the small and cheap category.

I have 8x25(?) Bushnell binoculars that I have for years that work fine and are small enough to toss in a range bag.

any particular magnification range thats best suited to those distances?

IMO, one of those small compact scopes like this,

would work well for what you're looking for. I use a 16X and it works OK, despite the small objective diameters, at 50 yds. It fits easily into my range tool box.

Might depend on what you call cheap, but I found the Pentax 10x21 UCFR to be a good value and perfect for the use you describe. I take a pair to the range where they serve well in picking out .30 cal holes in targets out to 150 yards or so, and work well on .22 cal holes in targets on the 50yard line. YMMV depending on the age of your eyes.

The wife has always had trouble finding a pair of binoculars she could use well. After some shopping around, we found these fit her perfectly. I liked them so much I bought a second pair for myself to keep in the truck. Bought them from these folks.

What do you guys think for 10-25 yards, a 7x18 or 10x25 scope? Or both are too much?

There was a gentleman here on THR selling new surplus russian binos. They weren't exactly cheap, but they easily perform as well as $800 steiners. I picked up 2 and absolutely love them. Might no be exactly what you are looking for, but they would certianly be useful for other things, which the el cheapo kind wouldn't be.

Why do all you guys buy pairs, or sets, of binoculars??

Why don't you just buy a binocular and save some money? YOu can't use but one binocular at a time. :)
