sorry for the title, ment 50-70 can that be changed.

Anyone here load BP for there 50-70, i picked up a cut down 1868 trapdoor springfield, it's a nice handling gun and would make a nice deer rifle. i really don't need full power BP loads, i think i read they used 55 grains for the carbines, that should be plenty for deer with in 100 yards.

for right now i will used pyrodex, i have to go to another state for real black powder. i made up some wades that are about .030, i have the lee 450 mold, anyone use a lube cookie or just whats on the bullet.thanks.troy.

I load real black powder to the top of the casing but with pyrodex you could probably just load it to the seating depth. Black powder cartridges were meant to be loaded full. Just read all the warnings about the danger of igniting a less than full space of black powder. I believe that is called blasting powder in that situation.....

i would compres the powder and use wads as fillers. if i have to use a full case that's ok, i just fingered with pyrodex it maybe a warm load.

45-70-500
Size case, prime said case, flare, drop tube 60ish grains holy black or black mz, over powder wad to fill case, a beeswax/gulf wax cookie (cuz it's Arizona, 112°+, and anything else will just melt/run.), Seat pre lubed projo and done.

Buddy loads 50-70, 38-55, 450-577 the same general way.

Do you have any problems with Black MZ turning into a black tarred mess when you use a lube as described? I tried lube on one of my revolvers and it made a royal mess of things. I have not used any lubes with my 45/70 loads with Black MZ and clean up has been almost the same as shooting smokeless.

pyrodex is very very corrosive, go with real black or black horn 209 powder. use a 60 thousands wad between powder and bullet. dont go heavy on the load. about 1200 ft per sec for the bullet coming out of the barrel will be about right. the 50/70 is a wonderful cartridge.

I have to see if I can get some black, they can't sell it here in ny. I did two loads to try, just have to see when I can get out and shoot.

55 grs with a 450 grs bullet is a little light. 60 - 65 will likely be the sweet spot. Finding the right compression - 1/8" is a good place to start and fitting components to the right height and seating depth can be a bit fiddly. Should take care of any deer outside the Jurasic Period though!

Have you personally used blachorn? I tried it on both cartridge rifles and muzzleloader. The only way I got good accuracy was after 3-5 fouling shots.
For target shooting it was good.

yes, and ive never had that problem. i have no answer for you. i shoot it in my cowboy uberti colts, my inline and side locks with magspark nipples on them. i have a icecream pail full of 45/70 loaded with black horn 209 powder a 60 thousand wad and a 425 grain swagged paper patched bullet.the first shots are accurate as is all the ones after it. it doesnt really foul, their is a very fine dry dust that doesnt stick to the inside of the bore of the guns. it can act as a lube to the next rounds. i would have to be with you to see if their is something that causes your problem but from here i have no answer. as for me, real black and black horn 209 powder are the most accurate powders i can use. triple 7 is a accurate powder but leaves a candy like hardness in the breach of the rifles. as to my usberti colts i use triple 7 in my 38 specials. of course i use a 60 thousands wad and a lubed round ball roll crimped over the end of it. no candy like hardness in the back of the barrel of the handguns. i always clean my uberti colts after i shoot them. the reason i think pyrodex can prove not accurate to some is it is so spongy. if you can compress the very same way every time it can be accurate. it is a very corrosive powder, much more than real black. the shooters i have come in contact with that do the most accurate shooting with pyrodex is they use the p finer grade powder. if you use pyrodex, clean clean clean when your done shooting. i wish i had a answer for you but i dont.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something that I'm doing wrong with it. I did try duplexing it with 3 grains of 700x and my issues went away. I wasn't that desperate to make it work, so I went back to black powder.
