Had plans to try and get to the range today but weather got in the way. Went early AM and took care of the dogs daily jaunt through some brushy areas frequently visited by deer. Wet and overcast with a steady drizzle. That put the kibosh on my range outing. The wife was in town visiting a German bakery and then a deli for meats and cheeses. Knew I had about 2 hours minimum to myself and decided to pull the black powder rifles out of the gun cabinet and give them a rub down with a silicone impregnated gun cloth and then a quick bore swab with CLP. Been a good while since I’ve done that. The room they sit in has low humidity but it was time to just get it done.

First up were 3 Thompsons from top to bottom in .36, .45 and 50 cal. Of the 3 the .50 cal is my favorite for sentimental reasons. It was a Father's Day gift back in 95-96 and has dropped deer, javelina and hogs. Some of those hunts were with a good friend and co-worker who has since given up the ghost.

As with just about anything…what is thought to only take a few minutes turns into a much longer affair. I noticed some carbon build up around one of the nipples and decided to pull it and of course that required me to run up the stairs from the basement and out to the reloading room a few times and get more items as the task became more involved.

These Thompsons, a .54 and .58 cal Big Bore went much faster.

I bought this .50 cal CVA for $150. Undoubtably it was a kit gun as it had a couple of issues which I had a reputable local smith resolve for minimal cost. Surprisingly accurate with a patched round ball and 65-70 grains of powder.

Next was the .45 cal Bob Tingle rifle. I saw it sitting in the used rack at a LGS that has long since shuttered its doors. I was struck by how pristine it was and the manufacturer. Having never heard of him I Googled the name and after reading one article pulled it out of the rack and ponied up the cash. I like the poured pewter nose cap.

In this same cabinet I store a couple of spare take-off Mossberg 500 Vent rib 12-gauge barrels, so I swabbed them and wiped them down as well.

While cleaning it I noticed that the .36 cal Thompson had some lateral play in the back sight and called my smith to see when I could drop it off. Will take it over Monday to have him take a look at it. Didn't feel like running it to ground myself as I have a fairly busy schedule next week.

Nice collection.

I'm not surprised that you see good accuracy from the CVA, they always had good barrels.

As to the Tingle, superb find. My father had one that shot lights out.

Since I was in the mood I called my son in law Saturday to have him drop his gun off for a look over. He didn’t get it to me until yesterday (Sunday).

I gifted him a used TC Hawken in .50 cal some years back I picked up off another party. Has some honest wear on it but still a decent gun. We competed at a local Rendezvous BP shoot as walk-ons. He outshot me. :( We plan to compete again this year.

This time it was as simple as running a patch of CLP down the bore and giving the gun a good wipe down before putting it back in the sock.

Gonna finish my cup of coffee and then run the .36 cal with the loose rear sight to the smith.
