I shot this 8 point this morning with my new Marlin 336 in 30-30. I am using a Weaver V3 scope and Winchester ammo. I messed up and got hollowpoints instead of powerpoints so there was a lot more damage than I wanted. He still ran almost 60 yards into a shallow pond between two creeks. I got real wet (and cold) getting him out. Nothing special, just thought I would share for ya'll fellowminded folks out there. Happy New Years everyone!

Good for you on getting your deer. I didn't get one this year.

Still have some left in the freezer from last year though. It's wrapped real good and will last me till next year if I ration it.

sulaco- nice work!
you'll take better pics w/o a facemask though - unless it is just that cold there!

deer season opens back up for us tomorrow (1 jan). i've had an outstanding deer year this year, and look forward to kicking '06 off appropriately.

outstanding way for you to send '05 out!

Thanks Daniel. Too bad you didn't get one. Yeah I am sure the meat will stay good for a while. Better luck next year! :)

Hehe, no facemask, I just don't like my mug all over the internet. Less is more in my opinion.

Yeah, I was happy to close out the season with this one. They don't get real dang big down here so he was decent size.

Nice deer. Sounds like he got his revenge by dying in an inconvenient spot. ;)

I'm with you there. It even irks me a bit when I get in the frame if a stranger is taking pictures in public. I know it's irrational, but there it is anyway...

Oh he did indeed. Me and another fella tried to find a way in for a while and then we went and got some help. There was 3 of us in it up to our waists when we found him. Then I had to drag him out through the swamp which was full of beaver spears, cyprus knees, briars, thorns and little scrub oaks. It was enough that if I sit that stand next year, I will think twice about shooting! I was wearing my Glock 19 and I noticed a waterline about halfway up the barrel when I got home tonight. Heh, good thing it's a Glock. I might think about cleaning it again before next season. ;)

Gotta love it - good deer, good story, good rifle. <sniff> I love a happy ending.... :D

Thanks rbernie. I had to shoot him left handed because of where he came out at. He came out just behind two does and two smaller bucks busted out behind him when I shot. Another guy sat this stand 4 times in a row this week and never saw a thing. I got in it for 2 hours this morning and saw 5 and killed one! :D

Hunted six days last week and saw 14 deer. Couldn't get on a buck about the size of yours because of where he came out (on my right) and how he behaved (immediately trotted down a logging road out of sight).

Shot a nice sized doe for the freezer with my Marlin .30-30. Like you, it was the first deer I'd killed with the rifle. Shot her straight on at about 20-25 yards. No jumping or antics; she just turned and ran as though I'd missed her. Found her laid up about 20 yards down the hill in some pine scrub. Bullet entered one side of the rib cage (quarter sized hole on inside) and exited the other (half-dollar sized hole on inside). Used plain-old, green-box 150 gr. Remington Core Lokt.

Not nearly as hard to get out of the woods as your eight-point.

Nice buck! Good hunting.

Congrats on the doe. That's what I was hoping for but the two that came out just before this buck were too quick for me to get setup. Believe it or not, I was adjusting on my seat when I looked over and saw the two does. I don't know if they saw or heard me but by the time I saw them, they were walking down the road away from me. They came off a game trail on my right. Once I got the rifle on my left shoulder, this buck stepped out. He knew I had him. When I shot, two more smaller bucks followed him out. Honestly, I could have shot the third one but I let him walk. I couldn't believe how fast I had worked the lever with my off hand. I guess adrenaline is good to have now and again. :)

Congratulations on a nice buck. Its nice to see that I am not the only guy here that takes his venison with a 30-30!

I prefer a 30-30 or 35 Remington levergun to anything else. I like a good levergun almost as much as I like my pump shotguns. Other than a lightweight .243 bolt gun, I can't imagine anything working better on Whitetail than a good levergun. I put up with a lot of ribbing from people on my old 30-30. And even more if I use a .243. To most people, a levergun is some kind of poor man's deer rifle. Or something less serious hunters use. I just laugh on the inside when I hear these things. And those same folks consider the .243 as a kids beginner deer rifle. I wonder if ignorance really is bliss? ;)

That settles it. I'm stalking you next year and finding out where you hunt! The farm in Elgin I hunt needs to be restocked!!
We actually have a problem of the landowners next to us running dogs across the farm all the time. I think the deer finally gave up and moved on to another area without dogs constantly running. I was going to go today (last day of season) but they are calling for some really nasty storms to blow through the area.
Maybe next year..............

Hey Scott, I took this deer on a 750 acre black water swamp outside Springfield which is down in Orangeburg. There is deer, snakes, turkey, squirrels, wood ducks, hog/boar, rabbits, snakes, dove, quail, snakes and alligator down there. Last year a guy killed a 4 foot gator in a pond close to where that picture was taken I think. I have seen pictures of a 5 foot and a six foot rattler killed down there. Cottonmouths are everywhere too. I was lucky it was winter when that buck decided to drown in the pond because I don't much fancy the idea of wading through a gator pond with moccasins around.

I was supposed to go again today too but my sorry cousin backed out at the last minute. I was heading up to his place near where you hunt and we were going to be up around Bethune. I wish I could have gone. I still have room in the freezer for some more meat! :neener:
