I've got a number of hand-me-downs. One of them is a Browning Challenger II (from what I understand). It is in great shape. But there is one visible blemish and it is a smidgen of rust on the side. Id like to remove the rust but I have no idea how without removing the nice blueing that surrounds it.

Same with a couple shotguns I've got. Some of them have tiny spots of rust.

What do I do and how do I do it.

Someone at a Bass Pro said I needed to get some Blue Wonder. Thoughts?

Spot Rust Removal

One way that works for me is to rub the rusted area with 0000 steel wool and kerosene or diesel fuel. Rub easy! CLP with steel wool works, too. When you wipe it with a clean white cloth you'll see if you have all the rust off, or not. Blue Wonder...my experience with it has not been good. Like all cold blues, the advertising never quite meets up with the results. I wonder why I bought it :)

George is right. Fine steel wool and oil works great for removing rust without damaging the bluing.

As for Blue Wonder, I've been tinkering with it lately and I'm not impressed. It's hard to get a dark, even blue, and it's also a plating rather than actual bluing. This makes it hard to remove later if you decided to have it reblued. Wheeler Engineering makes a bluing product that is supposedly more durable than hot bluing. I have had some limited experience with it and it sure is a pretty finish. If it's half as durable as they say it is, I think it'll beat out Oxphoblue as the new cold bluing champ.

I would just remove the rust as already noted, then keep it oiled to prevent any more rust. A little missing bluing is no big deal.

Blue Wonder cleaner with some 0000 steel wool does a very good job of cleaning off rust, without damaging the bluing.

If you mean Blue Wonder Cleaner, that is very good for removing rust. Their Gun Blue isn't worth the time or money.
