Bolt wont open on REM Model 742 6mm

My friends 742 bolt wont open it has a live round in the chamber. but the round is not fully chambered. The magazine is removed. Is there a trick to free the bolt up??

Would removing the trigger assembly assist in determining why the bolt is stuck??

I dont have the gun so I cant take a photo.

Any assistance would be appreciated!!

Whack it with a rubber mallet or piece of wood? Obviously safely outdoors with ample backstop.

Well I solved my friends problem. It was classic case of operator error. He got 243 ammo mixed up with the 6mm ammo. I inspected the chamber with my penlight and could not see any fouling or brass shards. I drop a round in and it was sticking out of chamber 1/2 inch or so. Bolt would lock up tight but not go in battery!! we used a ram rod and rear pressure on the charging handle to remove the 243. I really started inspecting the ammo and finally realized he had been trying to chamber 243 in a 6mm chamber!

No harm no foul, he didnt miss a shot at a deer.

My advice is when encountering problems with firearms always check the ammo first.

I'll bet from now on he keeps each caliber in its own box and reads the label to verify the correct caliber every time he opens a box.
