I have had this book (new to me) for a week, and only bought it because I thought I would get enlightened. I have many reservations about it and I have read it cover to cover.

Has anyone else here read this book? I would like to hear any comments you folks may have, and then I will post my comments.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jim

Shiffers is into self-publication. His shtick is Myth v. Reality bla bla, whatever. It’s a business model; Such a Deal. Inc. and is no doubt profitable - for him.

Not a serious book and verges on the worthless.

Sorry bud, but you asked.

Yes, I asked and your reply was very close to my thinking. The author has a large predisposition toward the Remington NMA and thinks all open-top Colts (1849, 1851, 1860) are junk and will always "shoot loose". However, he has praise for the Manhattan revolver. Go figure. His main premise seems to be his belief that most ACW era revolvers were very inaccurate with round ball, and tries to prove it using conicals.

I did garner some information about the Austin Freeman revolver and the Slocum revolver. The book has many good photographs, so I will relegate it as a "coffee table" book.

Maybe we need a "Book Review" section so folks will not be buying totally blind.

Thanks for the reply!

Jim

(shakes head) My experience has been that the Remingtons and R&S revolvers, if in good shape, are outstandingly accurate with a properly fitted round ball. The best shooting I've ever done was with my original Remington...13 shots at 25 meters. 10 of them went into the 10-ring of a B-17 target (which is about 1.5 inches in diameter).

I'm of the opinion that you can't really judge the original Colt's and Remington's performance using old originals that are not in top condition or new replicas that are made with different specs and tolerances. Here is my best group from a new Pietta "Shooter's Model" with good tolerances, correctly sized chambers and high quality barrel. Six shots, from a rest at 25 yards, .457" roundballs and 20 grains 3F. The one flyer was my fault for not keeping my sight picture consistent with the other five shots.
