I looked for a 788 in .30-30 for several years. About fifteen or twenty years ago I walked into a motorcycle/gun shop in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and mentioned it to the owner. He said he thought he had one new in the box under a bunch of motorcycle parts over in the corner. I figured he was kidding, but I dug through some fenders and tanks and saw the familiar green box. I felt like I found the Holy Grail!

My grandfather has one in 30-30 with a blonde colored stock. Beautiful rifle.

Triggers on the 788 can allways be tuned or changed to a aftermarket trigger. 40 years later a triggers still are not really better. Even the newest rem x mark and the savage accuratrigger are not great. But with a little work the 788 trigger does come around well for hunting.

It does seem ironic to me that, everything being equal in terms of condition and chambering, the "economy" line Model 788 alternative to the "high-price spread" Model 700 generally fetches more money at gun shows in these parts.

I see them often for as high as $500 and $425-$450 being the norm. I am fortunate in that I found my 3 for $250 or less each less glass. I would go $300 for an older long barreled model if it was in cherry shape and a caliber that I wanted and as has been pointed out the price could go up or down considering the number of mags or lack there of since it is not uncommon to see them with a $50 dollar price attached.

They are Mini Mauser, still made, by ZASTAVA, just depends on who's importing them, Navy Arms did for a number of years and so have many others.

What are you talking about? Surely not Remington model 788. The Remington model 788 is a multi lug rear locking action make by Remington and many (including me) consider them to be just as good as the model 700 or even better. You must be thinking about the model 798/799 series imported by Remington for a few years.

Model 788 were/are one of the best values in a "basic" bolt gun than can be found. For the most part it tends to be an extremely accurate rifle in most calibers across the board with it's biggest detractor being the trigger and the rear-locking lugs. In lesser calibers (.44 .222, .223, -30/30) the rear lugs usually do not present problems. With hotter chamberings (25-06mm, .243 ,7mm-08, & .308) however, case-stretch, head separation and head space
issues can be problematic (especially in used guns) where re-loading has pushed pressure limits. In these instances, trim lengths become especially critical.
