Bought an AR Lower Today. What to Do With It?!

I’m liking the PSA 10.5” or 11.5” kit at the moment. But there is some interesting stuff in .223 Wylde from Davidson defense that I like.

Personally, I would stay away from Davidson Defense and any other name they use. They definitely do not have the best reputation for quality or customer service. Do a search for Davidson Defense reviews and you will see what I'm talking about. You would be better served by watching Palmetto State Armory for sales.

I’m thinking that you might be buying some more lowers pretty soon

When Anderson's stripped lowers hit the market for $39 I usually grab a couple and throw on the shelf for later projects. That's how I ended up needing a new safe. Actually threw 2 together using left over pieces parts (18' .223 and 16" 7.62x39) when I found a good deal on barrels and bolts.

PSA, Primary Arms are my two fav to watch for good deals. Buddy has 2 Davidson Defense uppers (.450 Bushmaster and .50 Beowulf) and both feed, shoot and cycle just fine so far. Time will tell though...

I did end up reading enough recent stuff about Davidson that I’m moving on from them. How is CBC? Anybody buy from them recently?

First and foremost, do you already have an M4 AR variant in .223? If not, start there and then move on to more interesting calibers. Every gunny needs at least 1 basic M4 type .223 AR in their arsenal.

I think a platform of promising to put a AR15 in every household would result in a landfall election victory.

A lot of us suffer from BRD (Black Rifle Disease). Some suffer from it more than others.

BRD is treatable. I am 50/50 in the treatment program. Other colors I foresee using to combat BRD are Purple and Red. I am at Step 5 in AR Anonymous Program and I am hoping to progress to Step 6 soon.

I ended up ordering a cheap pistol kit from PSA. We’ll see how she goes!

Gunny, can you shoot me a pic? I know what a muzzle brake is and what it does, but i don’t know what you mean by linear brake. Thanks.
If building a pistol in 5.56 you need a to go with a Flash can or a Linear break so, the sound will be directed forward.

I’ve bought plenty of parts and uppers from Delta Team Tactical. I did have trouble with one upper kit in 300 Blackout. It had a carbine gas system and no matter what I did, it just wouldn’t run. I had it apart and back together so many times that I ended up buggering up a screw abs scratching the handrail. They asked me to send it back. Two weeks later it was returned with a new barrel with the pistol gas system and a new handrail. They didn’t charge me anything. And the upper ran like a top.
CBC is also a good company. I’ve used a few of their uppers for builds.
Mass Defense is another good place to buy from.

JSE Surplus is another.

The linear brake is a flash hider, but it vents gas to the front. Here’s one on my daughter’s rifle.

A flash can is just open in the front. Both will vent noise away from the shooter.

I've found deals at Bear Creek Arsenal and Durkin Tactical. I've used Delta Team Tactical and had no problems with a 20"upper, their accessories have good prices but they always charge shipping and taxes so you have to make a bigger order to equal out and they have slooww shipping. PSA has competitive prices. Primary Arms has good sales.
Good luck with your first of many, I usually purchase lowers when on sale either online or at anniversary sales locally.

Here is the cheap kit I bought:

It comes with a front sight post but I am thinking about putting a cheap red dot on it. I don’t know much about these. Are they like quality glass scopes, where you really do get what you pay for? Or are they pretty much all the same?

For a cheap (sub $100) red dot sight, I highly recommend getting either a Bushnell TRS-25 or a Primary Arms RDS. What ever red dot you decide to get, make sure it has the correct riser for either absolute witness or lower 1/3 witness to line up with iron sights.

You really do get what you pay for with red dots (or other kinds of 1x electronic sights). The question is, do you need the extra features you’re paying for?

The best red dot sights you can buy are made by Aimpoint. They’re super durable, they have almost zero parallax, and the batteries last for many years, even if left constantly on. Thanks to improving technology, though, many cheaper red dots are starting to have great battery life too. And many people don’t need crazy durability. So that leaves the parallax issue, which is less of a problem for causal range shooting where your head is usually in the same position each time.
