Over in another forum, a member suggested we boycott oil.

I say let's take it another step.

Instead putting $100 in the pockets of the oil fat cats when filling up your rig for a weekend trip, stay home and donate the money to your favorite charity for those poor folks in Louisiana who need our help.

Yup ... I think you have a good idea. I planed to stay put anyway, and I like your suggestion ...

Of course most folks won't do this I suspect, but it's the thought that counts.

I've donated some already.

Tomorrow I'm driving 105 miles to see my parents. My father is 83 and my mother will be 81 this month. We're going to the range - mom reads in the car while we shoot - and then they're taking me to dinner to celebrate my birthday. I'll burn about 8 gallons for the round trip. Sorry, some things won't wait.

I got an e-mail about something like this while ago. You'd have to boycott for something like a month for you to make an impact, and even then, you're not gauranteed to hit them very hard. Someone gave me a snopes link, I'll have to go look for it.

Unfortunately in our world boycotting oil is boycotting everything you do... like work, school, groceries, and other things.

IIRC, a few years ago, the French govt. tried to raise the taxes on gas and diesel fuel. The farmers and truckers responded by parking their trucks and tractors in the nations highways and, in effect, shutting down the country. Needless to say, the politicians backed down and recended the tax hike. I don't care much for the French, but you gotta admit they did a good job of sticking together. Too bad we don't have the same national cohesion here.

Cleaning out closets

The wife and I were planning on our annual closet cleaning but figured we'd get an early start this year and donate the clothes we get rid of to the Salvation Army. Not to hijack the thread, but I tend to avoid the R.C. because so much of our donations are eaten up with "administrative costs".

Don’t drive to work or school either … and keep it up for a fiscal quarter.

You have no idea. My mother worked for the RC as a phlebotomist (the lady who sticks you), and she has quite a bit of commentary. Your donations of money and blood go to help the organization sell blood to hospitals. Just gives you the warm fuzzies, don't it?

No, no, no. Give this boycott thing a try. I'm doing it, although not as a boycott. I just don't have the cash to spend on gas all the time, so I got a new pair of boots and I just walk everywhere I can. I'm putting fewer miles on my car, spending far less on fuel, and losing this gigantic fat butt that seems to follow me everywhere. If we all did this, albeit with better motives, we'd be better for it. And, if you think the money you're saving is well spent in charity (which I do), then other people are better for it, too.

The way I see it boycot to keep money out of the terrorists pockets. Even though they already have all the money they need to keep bombing places for a very long time. I already stop at the store on the way to and from work instead of making a special trip on my day off. I'm going to take it one step further and ride my sons 15 speed bike to the store for small purchases or maybe buy a basket for the bike. I think we all need more excercise and I need more money for guns and ammo. Lets go for it ! !

You know what? I've already seen far too much political grandstanding about Katrina from every shmuck with the ability to get face time on television, be it CNN or Jesus & Pals on cable access.

My patience for such has worn out.
