Washington, D.C. - Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement about yesterday's tragic shooting in Omaha, Nebraska:

"Our sympathies and prayers go to the families of the eight who died and the five who were wounded in yesterday's mall shooting in Omaha.

"Having an SKS rifle and high-capacity ammunition clips enabled a troubled young man to kill and injure a large number of people quickly and efficiently. Allowing the easy acquisition and possession of military-style weapons like this is foolhardy and the results are tragic.

"We need to find out how and where the killer got this gun and this ammunition. We need to stop selling military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips to civilians. The killer knew what he was going to do, and he knew what tools he needed. Our weak gun laws make these killing machines readily available. We can take steps to prevent tragedies like this in the future."

Examples of assault weapon violence since the expiration of the Federal assault weapons ban can be found at http://www.bradycampaign.org/xshare/pdf/assault/awb_violence.pdf.

"Having an SKS rifle and high-capacity ammunition clips [MAGAZINES] enabled a troubled young man to kill and injure a large number of people quickly and efficiently. Allowing the easy acquisition and possession of military-style weapons like this is foolhardy and the results are tragic.

We need to stop selling military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips [MAGAZINES!!!!] to civilians [SERFS YOU MEAN?]. The killer knew what he was going to do, and he knew what tools he needed [SOMETHING HE KNEW OTHER PEOPLE IN THE MALL WOULDN'T HAVE]. Our weak gun laws make these killing machines [WHO? THE NUTJOB PERSON?] readily available. We can take steps to prevent tragedies like this in the future."

I'm curious about the rifle.
Did it take high-capacity magazines like some modified SKSs, or are they actually talking about clips? The lack of proper nomenclature is confusing: if they're magazines, Brady is stupid for calling them clips; if they're clips, Brady is stupid (or dishonest) for calling them high capacity!
At least they didn't call it an assault rifle.

I don't understand how anybody could advocate banning a 10-shot, fixed magazine battle rifle! Even if you assume the viewpoint of "the object is evil and not the person," the SKS is not a particularly "scary" rifle.

doesn't matter, the public already has SKS in their heads so they're going to work with that.

The gun didn't do it, putting all our kids on Mind altering psychotropic drugs caused it. The manufacturers, the school boards and the doctors should have a huge class action lawsuit brought against them by the parents of the victims and the shooter. A pill cannot replace love and understanding, the system failed, and there could be thousands of kids out there fixing to snap. It is the socialism, the policy and the drugs people!

Brady is stupid (or dishonest)

Do we have to make a choice between the two?

Seriously though, I'm surprised they forgot the other side of the argument. Yes, it can be argued that there's no need for "assault weapons". However, it can also be argued (with considerably more intellectual honesty), that there's no need for a ban on said rifles.

Yes, a man shot eight people with his rifle, before shooting himself. However, how many "assault weapon" owners did not shoot innocent people on the same day?

To me, it just comes down to right and wrong. Using the misuse of a gun, which killed innocent people, to attack gun owners who are equally innocent (and they are, that much is undisputable), is wrong, no matter how you try and spin it.

You can't justify the unjustifiable, and yet Paul Helmke and his Death Eaters* insist on trying to do so, every chance they get.

*Sorry 'bout this comparison, I'm reading through a certain British fantasy book series, and it just stuck. Sounds appropriate anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if all of the Brady Campaign had Dark Marks on their arms.

The local media here is reporting that an "assault weapon" was used in the New Life Church shooting, here in Colorado Springs. The kicker is.....THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT WEAPON WAS ACTUALLY USED!:banghead::cuss: It seems that every time there is a mass public shooting, the automatic response is....assault weapon, assault weapon. This is blatantly dishonest and stupid. But what else would I expect from these idiot reporters.:fire::banghead:

Yep, they are even calling the SKS that was found in the nut's car an "Assault Rifle".

When was the last time you saw a Full-Auto SKS? I've never even heard of one.
