Brass Catcher

Can anyone recommend a brass catcher that is not a ton of money, not to bulky, for use from a bench on a pistol range ? I am getting really tired of picking up my brass, especially when someone else is shooting the same caliber as I am. Thanks
 
I got a free beer commercial beach umbrella from a local watering hole when they replaced them with new ones.

I just open it and lay it upside down where the brass is landing.

Go out and buy a poncho in a mesh bag or any other mesh bag. Loop a second drawstring through (since most mesh bags have only 1) and you are all set.
 
Thanks, not many used beach umbrellas here in Washington, lot of rain umbrellas though, might be a bit small though. Not sure how wearing a poncho would work but maybe I will give it a try :) I think I will keep on looking but thanks for the help.
 
Not the poncho. Some ponchos are sold in a mesh bag. The mesh bag can be used as a brass catcher, more effective on rifles. Haven't found a really good brass catcher for semi-auto pistols other than putting a tarp or something about where brass lands.
 
Pretty much any big ground cover or paint drop cloth works. Tarps are good, but a little heavy. For low weight and low cost, the best option is an old worn out bed sheet that you're going to toss out anyway.

For the "money is no object" option, Google "brass magnet". There's a guy at my range who has one, and it's truly the deluxe solution, but he almost can't shoot for fear someone will walk on it when he's not looking.
 
Captaingyro, I saw one of those at the range last week, seemed to work pretty good. Would still need to buy a short telescoping tripod for it. I will keep my eye out for a sale. Thanks
 
The Brass Wizard is a great solution, but for many of us, the issue is trying not to let it hit the ground in the first place. Like the OP stated, one problem occurs when multiple shooters are all shooting the same caliber, and everybody wants to recover his brass. Having it all mixed up at your feet, or rolling out in front of the firing line, becomes pretty inconvenient. Also, if you're not on the extreme left, everybody else's brass is comin' your way.

I have a different issue: tall grass. Brass seems to just disappear in grass, except when the lawn mower comes by, when it magically jumps up into the blades.

When all is said and done, there's a lot to be said for just having a bag o' brass all ready to go home with you when you're done shooting...no muss, no fuss, no losses.
 
A guy on another board built one of these, and I'm building one too. I figure I can install it on a tripod for handguns, and clamp it to the bench for rifles.

Looks like it will work pretty well. Cheap to make, too.

The PVC is 1/2" and a 10 foot length will do the trick. The mesh is aluminum window screen material from almost any hardware store. Attaching the screen to the PVC can be done with various types of wire; brass, galv, whatever you can work through it. Maybe even heavy thread.

Mine is almost done, just have to finish wiring it to the PVC. I made mine 2 feet square, and had some pipe left over.

It's not my design, I found it on another board.

Most bullseye pistol shooters tend to just make their own brass catcher from an old mesh laundry bag and some 3/8" or 1/2" ridged plastic tubing you can pick up at Lowe's, etc. If you dont' glue the whole thing together, it takes up very little room in your shooting bag and assembles in a minute or two at most at the range..
