brass catchers

Anyone have experience with the brass catchers that attach to an AR15 type rifle? Do the cases tend to bounce back into the action and cause jams?

I hate to pelt shooters in adjacent lanes with my brass. I am going to order a brass catcher from Brownells.

I tried a brass catcher recently and was not impressed. Caused jam's, cases hung up in the web/netting material and actually melted some of the nylon material of the bag. POS from Aim Surplus.....Ed

I used a factory OEM brass catcher for about 12 shots and called the company and shipped it back.

It was a high-quality bag-type with metal wire frame. The way the bag flopped down the right side, the brass would jam the bolt open.

Hanging a sheet to the right of the rifle was easier than dealing with that brass catcher.

Instead of a brass catcher, you want a deflector that deflects all the empty brass into a small pile to your right.

Here are some photo's of a brass catcher I built for my CAR-15.
The mag bracket is 3/4" cabinet grade plywood. Drilled & tapped for a 1/4-20 Nylon clamp bolt.

Wire frame is 1/8" music wire.

Cage is black plastic hail screen attached with small cable ties.

It will fit any size AR15/M16 mag and is changed or dumped by simply loosening the clamp bolt a 1/2 turn or so and slipping it off.









It works great, with only an occasional case that bounces back into the open bolt. If I were doing it again I would make it bigger and wider at the ejection port opening with an angled deflector to knock the cases down into the bottom.

Total cost = $0.00 because I already had all the stuff in my Junque collection.

My AR drops the brass in a neat little area at the 4 O'Clock position about 5 to 6 feet away.

A little trick we used when I was shooting highpower was to simply clip one and one half coils from the ejector spring. Would drop the empties in a neat little pile right at your feet standing, or in a neat little pile right next to your elbow prone.

If at first it doesn't work, install another $.50 spring and start over.
