As I was perusing the nearly bare ammo shelves at my local Meijer, I decided to stock up a little on 00 buck and slugs for my 12 gauges. Surprisingly, they had 25 pack Remington 00 buck bulk packs for $19, so I snagged some. I also grabbed a couple boxes of the only slugs they had in stock, the Brenneke KO.

I've read about them, hear people rave about them. Really, what's the hype? Are they any better than a one ounce rifled slug? What makes them better, or is it really just hype?

I prefer Federal Truball and Truball penetrator at 1300fps and 1350fps respectively. Fiocchi also makes good lower velocity stuff that is accurate and does not take pleasure out of shooting at the range. The only Brenneke slugs I like are the universal tactical reduced velocity loads. For sabot I use Lightfield lites and Winchester BRI slugs with Vo of about 1350fps.

I didn't realize there was "hype" about the Brenneke slugs. They are a very old design. They work well in rifled or smoothbore barrels at a fraction of the cost of most sabot slugs. My Mossberg 930 rifled barrel shoots better with them to 100 yards than any other slug I have tried, and I've tried a lot. With slugs, it is all about accuracy. Killing efficiency isn't an issue with any 1+ oz hunk of lead if you can put it on the target.

No hype - just fact.

At least in every shotgun I've ever used them with. I buy 'em by the case.

I believe Brenneke slugs are well worth it for hunting, if your usage is something other than that I can't comment except that I don't believe in reduced recoil slugs for any purpose.

I bought some of these at Gander Mtn many years ago. But its not as accurate with my Remington 870 with 20 inch IC smooth bore with RS. Rather the Winchester econo pak at Walmart gave me a good group at 50 yds.
So like the saying goes, test for pattern .

They are worth the hype. For the money probably the best slugs on the market. Hard cast Brenneke SWC style profile for deep straight line penetration and integral wad for better accuracy.

Every shotgun barrel is an individual, so test them and see how they do.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

If your gun likes them, accuracy-wise, then you're gonna like them too. As long as you can put them where they have to go then you've got a real deer-harvesting setup at any normal shotgun range; if that's what you plan for them. Any other uses for them I have no experience with.

I'm not a tacticool e-light operator with an underslung master key semi auto slug slinger door breacher terrorist blasting hoorah shotgun, so yeah, deer and home defense would be all they would be used for.

I like the SWC profile. I bought two boxes, so I'll run them through my Rem 48 and Mav 88 and see how they are for accuracy. If I like them, I'll get more.

That's always the smart move with any unfamiliar shotgun ammo. Buy a box or a couple of boxes, pattern them, test for function, then if you like them and they do what you want, buy a bunch.

The breneke's have worked well for me. I think it's the home defense, tactical ones I have used. The federal true balls have also worked well for me.

Yes Brenneke KO and Black Magic slugs work fine in my all of my shotguns and they are worth the price. I also have some THD slugs as well which cycle fine in pump shotgun but not in my semi-auto shotgun.

Bren-NECK-ah slugs work great even for people who have no idea how to pronounce them. They are a lot harder than Fosters if you need penetration.

Around here the KO slugs are the same price as the economy Winchester slugs. I know the main reason they are liked is because they are not hollow but have a thck wall of lead up front that prevents them from becoming fragments on striking the target. Normal foster slugs break up usually after entering flesh.
