Brownells, a well known and respected supplier of gunsmithing tool, supplies, accessories and parts sent the following e-mail to their customers today. It contains some excellent advise.

A Gun Owner's Political Backup Plan

It's barely a week before the election that determines the direction of our country for the next four years. If you believe the polls, the presidential race appears to favor an anti-gun candidate, and gun owners have good reason to be concerned. What's our backup plan? As head of the federal government, the President has a lot of power, but remember that Congress actually makes the laws we live by.

The outcomes of critical U.S. House and Senate races on Nov. 4 will be as important for the future of our Second Amendment rights as who wins the White House. Our votes-and our dollars-make a much larger impact in these races than the run for President. Even if the Presidential race doesn't go the way you want, you can still have plenty of influence on how our country is governed in the coming years. This also means that a crucial Congressional race in a different state may also have a huge impact on your Second Amendment rights.

A great example of a candidate who will vigorously represent gun owners everywhere is Jim Gilmore, running for U.S. Senate from Virginia. From his deep commitment to the NRA and fantastic service on its Board, we can tell you Jim will be a strong Second Amendment Senator. If Jim gets elected, we all win, regardless of where we live. We need people like Jim Gilmore in Congress - regardless of who wins the White House.

Many other good pro-gun House and Senate candidates are fighting tough races, as they put on a full-court press this week into the late hours of next Monday. They need our help. Something you can do today is make small donations to some of these Senate and House candidates (up to $2,300 for federal races). Pick the ones that represent your values and the way of life you want protected. They can accept donations from anyone anywhere in the country, and all of them have websites, like Jim Gilmore's www.jimgilmoreforsenate.com, where you can make your donation today. This is how we do it:

1. Review the Electoral Vote website to find close races.
a. Senate Races
b. House Races

2. Check the NRA's ranking of the candidates at www.NRAPVF.org

3. Find Senate and House candidates who will represent our firearms rights, and donate to their campaigns.

Please join us in taking positive action right now, while there's still time, before next Tuesday. Support pro-gun candidates for Congress, and help defend our gun-owning rights against possible negative fallout from the Presidential election.

Has Brownells or any of the other big names in the gun industry done this in previous elections? I got the email yesterday and I was a little taken aback. It makes me wonder how much I need to go out and get before January 20th.

Oh yeah, but in the not too distant past it would have showed up looking a lot like junk mail.

Compuserve, AOL and Prodigy started in 1995, three years after the '92 election that put Clinton in office.

We were into the 2000s before anybody would have noticed Cooper Rifles or their contrast with Brownell's.

Grim times ahead but I derive some comfort from the widespread instant communication that we have now that wasn't available in the recent past - it sure wasn't around in 1994. Today there's 130,000 views between two versions of the "shoulder thing that goes up" video on Youtube.

It's going to be harder to convince the general populace that an AWB is about machine guns in 2009 - it was pretty easy in 1994.

When the AWB was about to expire, Bill O'Reilly discussed it, saying, "We don't want bazookas on the streets."

If a reporter and newsman is that ignorant, what can we expect of the general public, internet or no?

Previously, it would have gone unchallanged.

Things are different now, provided we don't totally alienate someone while educating them.

As Votaire said, "The English sometimes shoot an Admiral to encourage the others."

We do more good by making an example of Cooper than we do by wooing him back into the fold.

I was thinking more of educating O'Reilly although my response was more along the lines of pointing out that not everyone would recognize his obvious sarcasm.

I tried to make use of Cooper by telling the CFO I had to buy a Dakota to show where I stood. Didn't work. Not clear why as she was ok with my buying Bushmaster when Brady was suing them.

I should probably learn to hide Dakota catalogs - that woman has an uncanny memory for prices.

Look at the contrast between Brownell's and Cooper Firearms!

I'll be a steady customer of Brownell's.

You can say that again!!!!!!

Dan Cooper must make so much money from his firearms that he's now a member of the liberal elite, or thinks he is.

Support those that support you!!!!!

Well, heres to hoping that the bradley effect will save us. I'm voting for mccain of course but my vote won't count for much here in Michigan. I wish I had stayed a little longer in North Carolina, at least thats a battleground state.

Just gotta finish up making my purchases before 2009, gotta get an AK-47 and some mags, an ar-15 reciever and some mags and some more glock 18 mags.
