I am seriously contemplating ordering a new Browning BAR Mark II Safari in 308 Win Caliber. I hunted with one in the early '70s and liked the gun for elk hunting and mule deer. Are the new BARs still up to the quality and accuracy of the earlier guns?

Thanks, Bud

A lot depends on how long the shots are. My friend who hunts deer in Wisconsin swears by his, shots are all under 150 yds. Out west I would never even consider one for elk. To each their own.

I have a 90's vintage and it seems to be on par with my Dad's 70's Belgium model. Mine is .30-06 though. My nephew as the FNAR in .308 and it is a fine rifle. The action and components seem very similar to the BAR Safari.

On a side note, my family in Wyoming take elk with a .243, and have never lost one yet, so a .308 can do the job if the shooter does theirs.
