Browning BAR Type 1 in 30.06. The 5 rd hunting rifle, not the military one. Looked on Brownings website trying to date/value this rifle. According to it there should be a serial # followed by an M with a number after it designating the year of mfr. This one has M77 after a 54### serial. Anyone know why there are 2 numbers after the M, and what date I'm looking at? Approximate value?

Looking on Gunbroker, I did not see any Mark I versions at all. the MKII's were listed at around US$1400 (someone with an actual account would have to go look at completed listings to see what the actual sale prices were).

These things are very hard to assess. Things are typically "worth" what people are willing to pay for them. Which, is often a very different price than what it might cost, retail, to replace them.

This is something which has vexed the "gun community" for scores of years, if not generations.
