Owned a Ruger MkII 6-7/8" Target years ago as a teenager - grew up shooting that gun. :)

Thinking back, I probably only field stripped it for cleaning twice, and hated it. But it shot thousands of rounds dirty, without any issues, and was super accurate.

I sold the Ruger years ago. :banghead:

Anyway, time for a new .22 pistol.

I like the way the Browning feels in hand and have heard the trigger is better than the Ruger out of the box.

How about the S&W 22A? I like the idea of having S&W service to back me up if there is a problem, with free shipping. I know Ruger has good service as well. Not sure about Browning.

The pistol would mainly be a fun range pistol for punching paper out to 25 yards with open sights. May even try some silhouette matches later on, who knows.

Is the Browning the Ruger's equal?

Is the Ruger worth the PITA it is to disassmble?

BTW, how often does a .22 pistol really need cleaning? Can't they go quite awhile with a boresnake & wiping the bolt face & feed ramp area with solvent?

I spray mine with brake cleaner now and then, drain it, and then use a little spray lubricant, or simply a drop or two of Ed's Red in strategic places.

When Ruger went to the MK III, I cussed for an hour because of all the changes them made, they didn't make the one really needed change -- in the stripping procedure.

However, you can get a Majestic Speed Strip Kit for around $40 which makes stripping the Ruger a breeze.

I think either of the 3 would meet your needs for accuracy and such.

-If you like to tinker, the MK is the clear choice, with a plethora of aftermarket out there. However, its easier to buy barrels for the Buckmark since the Ruger "reciever" is the serialized part therefore new/different barrels must go through a FFL
-The Ruger is indeed a PIA to strip....the first 2 or 3 times you do it. After that, its no worse than a 1911 IMHO.

IMHO:

Buckmark trigger superior to Ruger, never shot a S&W 22A.

Browning is easier to clean, but hardly ever needs it. I don't worry about cleaning my Buckmark until I get regular FTF, then a quick scrub of the feed area and I'm good for a couple thousand rounds.

Breakdown and cleaning once a year or so.

Go Ruger! What you need is to have someone show you how to take down the gun. Once you know the secret handshake, it's easy! After that, owning them is a an even bigger blast!
