Browning Hi-power

He will probably have a price in mind, just trying to get an Idea of value so that I can make a reaonable counter offer if necessary. If he is asking too much, I will pass on it.
 
Bring $550 cash the day yoy look at it, tell him all you got is Five fiddy cash . :) 5 100s and a 50 should do it. Trust me . BTW early HPs don't usually do well with HP or SP ammo. But if you want it for a range shooter use ball FMJ ammo and it's all good. PS FMJ 9mm ammo worked on people for 100 years quite well.

That way, it's all that is on hand but you don't necessarily have to spend all of it and if it really speaks to you and your research says it's worth more, adjust from there.

Assuming it hasn’t been butchered, at $500 I’d be stupid not to take it. Above that would depend on how much you wanted it.
 
There won't be any more...at least not like they used to make them. They were selling for over $800 new before Browning finally threw in the towel. I would rather have a later model MK III, but there's some value in a face-to-face transfer.
 
You can get a Turkish made tisas copy for what, $500+/- if all you want is a shooter, that would probably work.
 
Sorry for being so late without an update. The gun was in realy nice shape, but he was mighty proud of it. He was willing to "sacrifice" it for $800. The Hi Power is on my list of guns that I want, but not at that price. Thanks to all for your input.
 
I doubt you brought along the Benjamins like I recommended. Works wonders the sight of them for those "proud" folks . Sometimes it doesn't but they usually call you back a week later or so if they really want to sell something is you are off a couple hundred or so. You would have been in the right range for it to work at $550-600 green ones .
 
I'd be fine with the fact that he didn't take the offer because I'd rather have a MK III of the sort that WVsig posted in Post #2 (if I was planning to shoot it). The early models that I've handled, including a friend's pristine T Series, did not have as tight a fit nor as good a trigger as the MK IIIs that I've handled, including mine. YMMV, but I prefer the Mk III.

Benjamins weren't going to impress him. He owns Merkel & Krieghoff shotguns and a Churchill double rifle. He wasn't selling because he needs the money.

THEN decide if you want a Hipower. They are pretty guns but have their strengths and weaknesses.

Then if you want one, look at COMPLETED auctions on GB and get a sense of the value. Here is another thing. If YOU FIND a Hipower with a good trigger it is worth about $200 more than one with a 8LB and/or creepy trigger. Ask me. I bought one that was LNIB for $500 many years ago, and ended up putting $200+ in the trigger. It is very nice now - not perfect. Overall, with the discontinuation of the breed, the price has gone up like it or not.

10 Years ago CDNN had a run of FN Belgians for $400. Prices went down. Have you seen the surplus ones? Not great shape and look like they need a refinish.

Again determine if you want it. Then look and some day you'll find a decent one at a decent price.

Well - I've seen the surplus ones. In fact , I acquired one a few months back for around $495 ... trigger at 7# with a very clean break. Now it is my best shooting and favorite semiautomatic handgun. Yes the finish is worn - the Israelis carried it for quite a while ; if I were offered a free re-blue I would say no. Would not change a thing.

You never know, sometimes people are living high on the credit card, monthly interest payments only.

A blip like no work, like now, and they're over the edge. Not saying that's what's doing with your seller, but....who knows.
 
I found and bought a hi-power right before Browning quit making them. I had others but foolishly sold them. One thing I would suggest, if you find one, get Craig Spegel to make you a set of grips. It may take a while to get them, but they are well worth the wait and money. Mine are made of king wood. Fit great and feel good. They are nice to look at too.

I don't blame you for walking at $800. When I read the OP, my gut reaction was "$600 low end, $700 high end". $800 would be above my top dollar as well, especially if the seller already thinks he's doing you a favor and "sacrificing" it for that price.
