Hello:

I received an old Browning 'Sweet Sixteen' shotgun recently, but it has 2 problems.

First, it tends to drop loaded shells from the magazine when it's fired. Not always, but often enough that it isn't right.

Then the hammer hook broke that keeps the hammer cocked off! Broke off clean. Has anyone ever seen this? The gun doubled, and the next shell that was fed by releasing the bolt fired on its' own. Of course the gun won't stay cocked. Changing the hammer doesn't look too hard, but I never sould have expected this.

When I got the gun the recoil system was assembled wrong, with the brass friction piece at the recediver end of the magazine tube (recoil) spring, and the friction ring missing (since replaced). I'm quite sure it's correct now (and was when these problems occurred.) It was corrected before I fired the gun but I cannot be sure it wasn't fired that way before I got it.

Has anyone ever had any experience with either problem? I"ve worked on several other types of guns but I don't really have any experience on these old guns and any suggestion would be a help.

Thanks!

a gunsmith friend of mine accidentally fatally shot him self when a franchi auto slipped out of his hands and doubled when he was test firing it. I would get that browning auto to a good gunsmith before i really had a bad accident. browning autos are a lot more complicated than the REM 1100 and Rem 870 that are so simple.

It's 2 3/4" original. The gun was made in the late 50's or early 60s. It's in good condition overall, very pretty light blond colored wood, lighter than most A5s, round knob.
