i have a Lyman's sharps 45/70 ,30" round barrel 1878. #2tang + front globe sights ,
i have been looking at the buckhorn rear sight , for my rifle as i hunt deer and goats up in the mountains and climb about all over , what would be the best one to get as i shoot from 5 to 200yds in the bush and up the mountains ,
i think that the #2 tang could get bumped and be put out of sight and by the time i lift the sight the deer will be gone, so will the full buckhorn or some other brand would be good as well , and can i still use the globe sight with barrel sights or do i have to get different ones , can you tell me the difference or the best way to go , as i will have to get a dovetail cut in the barrel , so i only won't to do it the right way 1st time , thank you ozygreg

Buckhorn, and especially full Buckhorn rear sights suck.

They are useless in low light.
And not much better in sunlight.

Get a conventional flat-top folding leif installed, and sight it in.

Then leave it folded down until you break the tang sight.

Like that's ever gonna happen!

Put the front sight blade in, only change it to one made from a real copper penny. Then take a small swiss file or thin hacksaw blade and widen the notch in the rear sight out a bit. Then correlate the marks on your sight to known distances with a range finder. That way you'll know exactly where to set the rear sight when a chance for the shot comes around.
