bug out food

I'm having trouble choosing the kind of food to put in my bug-out-bag.

I have some granola bars but I don't think that will do it.
 
For bug out rations:

I lean toward freeze-dried vacuum packed foods, light and fairly compact, and a wide variety availble. Some things can taste a little better, But this way you can have lots of variety, decent flavor, and the foods retained nutritional value is excellent.

For weekend backpacking trips I use MREs:

I like most of them, they come with matches, and when you're wanting something hot, all you need is 5 minutes and 1/2 cup of water. Always get the heater pouches with them.

I prefer this to carrying a backpacking stove and fuel for it.

Where are you gonna store your bag? If you're going to be keeping it in a closed car in summer heat, you might want to stick with mainstay or may day rations. Not much else will stand up to the heat and temp changes well.

Otherwise, I have a mix of MREs, peanut butter in a tube, Ramen, rice and foil packed tuna. Have used my bug out stash on multi day camp trips and found it to be a reasonably palatable menu while traveling well.

Food for thought, as it were.
 
that peanut butter in a tube sounds like a great idea. I gotta find some of that. The foil packed tuna sounds good too. I'm currently looking for a way to keep crackers from getting crushed in the bag.

I plan on having a bag in a car and two at home (one for the wife and me).

Keep the ideas coming.
 
Cheap, lightweight food:

-Instant oatmeal, the flavored packets.
-Ramen noodles.
-Powdered eggs.
-Powdered milk.
 
Buillion cubes
Multivitamin pills
Water purifiaction tablets (although not food, they help a lot in the food area)
Beef jerky
Nuts
Tabasco/other seasoning, including salt
Raisins/other dried fruit
Kool-ade packets
Tea/coffee, in bags or loose
Sugar

Plus the other ideas. Only thing I don't know is the shelf life of these items, except for the Jerky which has an expiration date of 18 months after manufacture. :eek:

A friend once suggested taking along seed packets of various vegetables, in case an extended leave were necessary.
 
I've got dehydrated/freeze-dried backpacking food, plus rice, beans, ramen and lifeboat rations (Datrex).
