Na, Bushnells are fine and all but anything under the elite has given me trouble, Nikons on the other hand have performed perfectly for me for less money and their BDC is the best rectical in the business, not bad at all for a $150 scope.

the 10x is an elite. and backed by some of the best people in the biz. nikon makes a good scope but the new offerings from bushy trumps them through the entire lineup.

I would beg to differ, my Banners did not hold a candle to my Prostaffs. The Nikon has better glass and better eye relief, yes I learned that the hard way, busted my nose wide open, that was the last Banner I ever bought.

DO NOT OVER LOOK A 7600; I have a $1300 dollar rifle....7600p/308 and I shot it SxS with my R5/308. At 200 yards ON A DOT NOT A "pie" TIN ....... Both groups would have put hole's in the heart of man or beast.

I would expect the same in a $1,300 setup, however, the OP did not mention thirteen hundred dollars, they mentioned six hundred dollars. Your great-shooting rifle is over twice that of the one the OP wants to make.:uhoh:

Savage Model 12? Or Savage BVSS? Both are laminated wood stocks, pistol grips, heavy fluted barrels, stainless actions & barrels, the only thing questionable is the price range you've set on it - my Model 12 in .223 w/ 1 in 7 twist cost around 900, I bought a BVSS in 22-250 w/ 1 in 9 twist for 600. Both are really nice shooters, right out of the box, and both are available in varying calibers, up to a .308, I believe.

I don't consider any scope that comes in a bubble wrap worth looking at so that eliminates the banner scopes. I'm not knocking nikon by any means I have had them and from their buckmaster line on up they are good scopes.

AH! I missed the stevens! It does ease my mind to see good deals like this come up. Thanks for the posted links, Kludge.

This thread has sort of taken a turn towards scopes, which isn't where I thought it was going. Like I said before, I've never given scopes much consideration. I know that Jeff from Gunblast likes Leupold scopes (or at least that what he throws on a lot of the guns he reviews), and that's about where my knowledge ends. I appreciate all the opinions on scopes. It's been a nice education.

Looking back to the rifle side of things, it seems like 2 names keep coming up: Thompson Center Icon and the Tikka T3 Hunter. Of these two, where might your elegance lie, and why? I'm leaning towards the Tikka, but I had the opportunity to handle a Ruger Scout rifle. PLEASE DON'T BEAT ME! I know it's a monkey wrench in this thread, but I couldn't believe how good it felt. The bolt, the trigger, the way it went to my shoulder...it was beautiful. Does it come in anything other than 308?

I know that the 243 (which I originally yearned for) is a necked down 308 case, so I can almost rationalize buying a Scout...I just don't know if I need that caliber when woodchucks will make up 80% of my targets. Of course, it would be the more effective zombie hunter...so I'm torn.

Woodchuck;

I've got several Tikka's, a coupla T3's among 'em. Good guns, but they do have their weird points. The floating recoil lug is an oddball for sure. If you never take the action outta the gun, you won't care. Unless the rust starts in there of course. Then there's the fact that Sako/Tikka is owned by Berreta nowadays. You can, of course, claim warranty, and in my personal experience they'll claim yer fulla male bovine excreta.

So what happened to the idea of finding a 788? It's pretty much got everything you said you wanted. And, you should have money left over for glass. Tell ya one thing, it's a helluva lot more solid gun than what's being built for the cheapie market these days. And yeah that most assuredly includes the bottom line Marlins, Stevens, and Savages. It does not include Howa and Tikka however.

If you can afford a Leupold, get one. They have the best warranty in the business. They are very good glass for the money, regardless of where in their line you purchase. Nikon also makes a quality product. I've got several of each & no complaints. The only supposedly real good optics company that's consistently been able to do the dirty to me is Burris. Bought four of their products, two scopes. One set of mounts was good, the rest was trash. Including the scope that was sent back for warranty & was returned telling me that all was within spec. Then the reticle fell over. As for sending it in, why bother? Junk is junk, even repaired or replaced junk.
