OK folks I have been saving up for it for a while, ever since I got to shoot one at the local rifle range. What I'm talking about is the Bullpup AK rifle (also known as aku-94)

http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/rifles/ak-47-and-rpk-rifles/p/romanian-bullpup-ak-rifle%2C-7-62x39-caliber-/cPath/209_214/products_id/1680

Now I have to ask should I really buy it? I already have a standard Romanian AK, that has gave me ZERO problems. I also stockpile the 7.62x39 ammo, and have about 10 30rd mags and 2 75rd drums. I realize some of these from the reviews have had some problems aside from the universally stated mushy trigger pull. I have read several websites on working out these other kinks and it seems to be a decent weapon if not at least a cool range toy.

The thing that is really turning me off is I haven't been able to locate one locally in the upstate of SC, so I will have to get it transferred in. If it turned out that I got a completely horrible one whats the deal on returning a weapon purchased thru an FFL transfer?

How are the folks at J&G sales to deal with, is there any other places you guys and gals would recommend purchasing it from instead, ya know like a cheaper price?

i think ak bull pups are awesome except that i shoot left handed and the thing would break my teeth out

you can return the gun if you dont like it since they dont call in the atf check until you pick it up and want it. just tell the ffl that you wish to return it. once its paid for and you take it home thats a little different

That is true I'd have to be sure not to let any lefties shoot it. I am right handed

Thanks for the info on returning it chevyforlife21.

Golly, I love bullpups. :D I have a wrong-handed neighbor that just loves to attempt to fire my M17...I usually catch him in time...but the first time he tried it I didn't and all I have to say about that is: that looks painful. I would have that hand thing taken care of so you can fire the good stuff. :p

While I love a nice bullpup, I despise all of the conversions that I have laid hands on. They all have spongy (by bullpup standards) triggers, ergonomics of a weed wacker (safety is nearly impossible on most), and typically have a flimsy feel to them. The AK bullpup kit is no exception, and save for the Muzzelite kits, is the worst I have ever had the displeasure to shoulder, it genuinely makes the standard AK feel well thought out and ergonomic. Additionally, drum magazines are very awkward for me in any bullpup. Other than that it's fine. :p

Yeah the trigger on the one I shot was pretty squishy. It didn't really seem to bother me that much, not nearly as much as these handguns with like 13 lb trigger pull.

I got an ECHO weed whacker so its pretty ergonomic.

To me the original AK's seems ergonomic plenty to me, I guess its all what your used to tho. I tried shooting a friends AR, didn't know anything about pulling back the cocking thing then pushing it foward, didn't know where to release the bolt or anything. To me I was like why did they make it so complicated. I'm not trying to knock the AR (not in this post at least) but it just seemed a little crazy to me.

I didn't have the drums back then so I'm not sure how awkward they would be in it but I can see your point.

Oh and ChefKristian that is essentially the same kit that is on the bullpup AK I linked in the first post of the thread, whether it would fit a .308 saiga or not I dunno. Out of the box I really doubt it, tho I do believe I seen one that with some work was put onto a 20 gauge Saiga.

I find the controls (really just the safety) on the AK to be lacking, but it certainly pales in comparison to the average bullpup conversion. Have you considered the other 7.62x39 bullpup...the new MSAR? I think they are butt ugly (but starting to grow on me), but they are a good solid carbine IMO. I have one at the top of my list.

:)

Well to be honest no I hadn't looked at the MSAR but I just did some Google'n.

My first thought is it doesn't look as ugly as I thought it would, I wouldn't call it butt ugly (ok the non black ones are) but its not the prettiest gun ever either. I didn't really find any pics of the 7.62x39 models but i'm betting there gonna be a no go for standard AK mags. Still would be interesting to know. I'm really liking the foregrip on them, I was wondering if that would be necessary to add to the other one.

Then I did something I shouldn't have done, I looked towards the right side of the google product search page, and they appear to be $1500 and UP for the 5.56 versions. This is above my price range, by a large amount.

You're correct unfortunately. All the Stg-E4 are based upon M16/AR-15 magazines, including the 7.62. I too really wish that it was standard cheapo AK rock-n-locks, particularly because I prefer 20rnds, and there are no AR 7.62x39mm 20s that I know of. :(

I expect them to sell in the neighborhood of $1200.00USD (.223s can be had for this), but I have yet to see any 7.62s out there as of yet.

:)

Seems to me that any bullpup AK should have the pistol grip or the magwell offset about 20 degrees so that the two don't interfere with each other and that the length of pull can be somewhat normal. The combination of an extremely curved magazine and rock and lock seating creates a real problem.

The reconfiguration of the trigger system with a cable is not good, I doubt you'd be able to empty a 20 rnd clip with out some jamming. See if you can locate the video on you tube it speaks for itself. Very cool looking weapon but I wouldn't bet my life on it! Same problems with the new SKS Bullpup. For the price, I'd get another AK or a Draco. Just my opinion though! Check out J&G or Classic Arms, I think the AK Bullpup from Century is about $499.
