Bullseye Competition Handguns

I've competed in Bullseye (Precision Pistol) matches for the past several decades. Each to their own but I've long resented the legitimacy of allowing any other kind of sights than irons on a Bullseye handgun. My Bullseye battery includes a Colt Gold Cup (circa 1972) auto, chambered in .45 ACP (I've tried mightily but I can't seem to wear this pistol out); a Smith & Wesson Model 25-2 revolver, also chambered in .45 ACP; a Smith & Wesson Model 52 auto, chambered in .38 Special; a Colt "Officers Special" revolver, chambered in .38 Special; a Smith & Wesson Model 41 auto, chambered in .22rf; a Ruger MKII, "Government" auto, chambered in .22 rf; a Smith & Wesson Model 617 revolver, chambered in .22 rf and a Browning "Medalist" auto, chambered in .22 rf.

Long Live the sport of Bullseye shooting!

Sweet line up!

I’ve had mixed results using red dot sights on pistols. I tried a 1911 and threw bullets from the 7 to 9 ring. I tried a Sig with one and touched the red bullseye with both shots. For now I’m still using the iron sights, though I’m sorely tempted to try a red dot on my Victory 22. I’m still practicing on 10 meter air pistol targets. I thought the closer distance would boost my confidence but it may be working in reverse. Those things are awfully small.

In the 70s a 22 lr broke the indoor 50 feet record with a scoped crosshair type scope.
I put a 4X leupold on a High Standard Victor, average scores went down. Trying to make tne perfect shot, changes how i squeeze the trigger.

Never tried a dot on a handgun.

I did run a handicap system indoors in the winters, 70s. Works well when shooters abilities are very different. Marksman to High Master. Each weeks scores were put in a book for each shooter. Photo of my scores, from back then. 20220116_133723.jpg BullseyePistol01.JPG

I thought that separate events were allowed for Iron Sights and those with optics. Club decision?????

My pistol scores are better with open sights then with a dot. Part of that was my cataracts, which are now gone, but I still get better target acquisition with open sights.

I’ve never shot with a red dot equipped pistol enough to get a score but I feel like I’d do better with iron sights too, at least for a while. It would probably balance out after a while.
