I am not aware of the US law if any as a prerequiste to gun ownership. Kindly, state what is currently required to own a handgun.

That all sounds good if, if you trust not just our current leaders, but all future administrations as well. That's why it's a bad idea to have the central Government in charge of any of our basic freedoms. Imagine if a future leader came along that made Obama and Holder look like Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Not good to have our basic, God given freedom administered by a future Chairman Mao.
