Never had this happen before, and it was in the box!

I bought this Queen stockman prior to Christmas 2010, pulled it out of the box to use, and found one broken spring.

I called up Queen and they said send it back, and it will be in the mail next week.

If you look at the end of the broken spring you can see rust. Would that be the cause of the break? Rust getting into a metal crack, expanding, and causing a fracture?

Looks like the spring was defective.

I don't believe the rust caused the crack, the crack/break was there and the rust just formed on the rough surface.

Probably cracked during production and the inspectors missed it. Spring might have had a bad tempering, too hard (and thus too brittle).

If there was a micro-crack and moisture got in and caused rusting it could have caused the spring to break completely. That's what causes spalling of reinforced concrete, as steel oxidizes it increases in volume and the resulting strain can over stress the surrounding areas causing fracture. The cause of the initial crack is the main problem though.

I used a schatt and morgan (queen) large cokebottle for about a year. The spring snapped and flew out much like the one in the picture. No rust visible and the knife steel is probably all stainless. I sent it back and will see what they do about it.

I received a letter a week after I sent the knife. Queen said it takes 4-6 weeks on a knife repair.

I will see if I get a new knife or a repaired knife.

A month to two month turnaround is better than Victorinox. I think it was four months or more on their repair of a Swiss Army knife.

I sent a SAK at the same time as the Queen. Heard nothing from Victorinox.

I had good luck with Victorinox, they replaced a broken spring on my Swiss Army Explorer and I got the knife back in about 4 weeks.
