OK, I'd like y'all's opinions, insight, prejudices, and SWAGs.
I have the money to buy either a M1 Garand (service grade) via the CMP or a CG63...but not both.
I don't think I'll need to describe the M1, but the CG63 might need a bit. The CG63 is a target rifle produced by the Swedes in the early 1960's. It is based on the 1896 Swede Mausers. Cut down stock, heavy free-floated bbl, target diopter sights, 6.5x55,
I'd like to get involved in NRA High Power competitions & either one will do, though in different classes. I must admit the Garand has more emotional pull, though I have a real soft spot for old rifles made with such craftsmanshift as exhibited by the CG63 & other Swede mausers.
M1 Garand Advantages vs CG63
1. Emotional Pull
2. Cheap(er) milsurp rounds
3. "Battle Rifle" construction...less worries of messing it up due to rough handling in the woods.
4. Semi-auto with bayo lug & other features anathema to Schumer, Fienstien, etc.
CG63 Advantages vs M1 Garand
1. Ready to be (NRA High Power) competitive out of the box
2. More forgiving WRT reloading (can use reduced/cast loads for practice)
3. Comes with no-bull target diopter sights
4. Generally much more accurate than any Garand, save those Garands re-worked into target rifles (from what I have read, this is not a trivial undertaking requiring much skill/$$$)
So, what do you think?
