After the fun I had at the last Bay Area shoot, I'm thinking of getting a 10/22 as a first rifle. I seem to recall there is a discrepancy between the federal and CA state magazine restrictions with regards to rimfires; is it legal for me to import a pre-ban 25-rounder?

Sorry, you're S.O.L on the pre-ban 25rnd unless you bought them and stored them before the ban, knowing that you were going to buy a 10/22 at a later date.

Good thing is that you can have a .22 rifle with a pistol grip and removable magazine because the assault rifle ban was for centerfire rifles.

Alright, I searched around and found the law. To wit:

12020(b)(25) As used in this section, "large-capacity magazine" means any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
(A) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
(B) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
(C) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.

This seems to say .22 hi-caps are ok. Sactown, are you sure?

Sactown is correct

Sorry pip., Sactown is on the money here: you really are SOL. The ".22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device" you see exempted in the law refers to fixed tubular magazines, like this:

The ammunition is stored in a fixed tube that's slung under the barrel, as is common with shotguns. The Ruger 10/22 takes a detachable box magazine (with a rotor inide, but that's a detail).

"No full-cap mags for you!"

'Course, there's no way for anyone to prove just when you brought the mag into the state... *walks away whistling innocently*

I could have sworn you said you had those hi cap 22 mags yrs ago:cool:

'now if I was to lay down these 25 round 10/22 magazines on the table and look away for a moment, and then when I turned back there was a small pile of cash in their place...'

Sorry pipsqueak. Looks like your out on this one. One of my minor regrets was never picking up a couple 3 or 4 of those ramline 25 rounders before the ban. I don't own a 10/22 but every time I go to Los Altos Rod and Gun and see the hosing on the tin can range, I always wish I had.

So I can have a folding stock and a flash hider on a post ban ruger 10/22?

I think you can have one but not both because the federal ban affects all magazine-fed semiautos.

I bought about 6 25 shot "hot lips" mags for my kids 10/22's when the ban was starting out there. Glad I did. I think I paid $14 for them. Now I see the far crappier Ramline mags in various papers out here for upwards of $65 apiece. They (Ramlines) really weren't even worth $14 because they jammed every other round. The hot lips mags have been good. I bought all the store had. Wish I could get more. Maybe if the fed ban sunsets, it will be OK outside the PRK.

Too bad we can't roll back time and get rid of Roberti, Roos and Diand Frankenstein. Now that all those laws are on the books out there, they will never come off. No sunset like the fed law.

I hope they do something with CCW to make that more fair but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. I've been gone for 1 and half now and may have to go back soon for awhile. What a drag after living in a free state for awhile.

Good thing the CA government prevents you from owning those mags - who knows what kind of damage gang-bangers could do with a 25-rounder on a 10-22!
