Went into East Hartford, CT Cabelas yesterday. A sign on the front door said in effect "weapons/firearms must be presented to the front desk" CCW holders exempt.

The CCW exempt part looked like it was added at a late time. Does anyone know if this is a national thing or just my local store? Does anyone know the story behind it?

I am sending them an email thanking them.

Same in Michigan. IIRC the sign specifically refers to customers bringing in firearms for sale or service. They need to be checked but this caused lots of confusion for CCW's.

The additional statement let's CCW's who are confused know they can go about their business. Neither side wants us to be handling our carry guns anyway, right?

I guess it's fairly common for store managers to forget (or not know) about the upsurge of Carry Licenses.

A couple of years ago two major sporting goods stores stores around here had the same kind of sign about checking in firearms, neglecting to add anything about CCW.

In one of them I talked to the manager about it and explained the situation, and he said there was no problem with licensed individuals, they just wanted guns brought in for repair, etc, checked in. I went back a week later, and sure enough there was a magic-markered addition to the sign which said, essentially, Concealed Carry Permits excepted.

Funny thing is, although I didn't talk to anybody in the other store, they soon had the same kind of addendum on their sign. Apparently I'm not the only one in the North denver Area who could be called "Johnny Concealedcarryseed."

I saw that sign when I went there. I didn't really read it closely... or pay any heed to it. While I was upstairs, I noticed they had all of the long guns out on display tie-wrapped. I momentarily thought about the sign and figured that's what they wanted to do with the guns people walk in with- ensure they're unloaded and locked up in some manner.

It's nice to hear the sign I ignored gave exemption to CCW folks. I'd think it may be a corporate decision not to upset or anger their customers. Money talks and they make a lot from gun folks. We can be a prickly bunch.

Any place that repairs guns or takes in used ones has to be worried about loaded pieces being handed over. That's a normal safety thing.

I saw one shop in Arizona that said "CCW pieces excepted, so long as they stay in the holster". Which makes sense: if you're shopping for, say, a new holster, you want the gun involved to have been checked unloaded and handled unloaded for that purpose.

The Cabela's here opened in Oct. 2006, and the initial sign did not have the CCW exemption, which caused some confusion. I remember being quite put out at this myself. I suspect quite a few people were as well, because it was changed shortly thereafter.

Same thing at the Bass Pro in my area. They added the CCW exempt portion because everyone was asking. CCW members always were exempt but it was not stated on the sign and caused a lot of confusion.

At Cabela's it's for those guns coming in to be sold, repaired, or fitted to accessories. That's corporate level. Stores themselves sometimes interpret it wrong.

If the door guys(or girls) cause you problems have them get a manager. Sometimes the door guys are new and don't know the policy correctly. If the manager still causes you problems call corporate and the sign and policy will be made clear.

reply for cabelas customer service

I got a reply to my email thanking them for the CCW clarification:

"This was do to our customer's suggestions. We are always open for idea's and implement those that will provide good customer service to our customers. Thank you for shopping with us.

Glad to see they responded to a CCW holders input.

Don't know if it's a national thing or not, but we have a Cabelas, Bass Pro, and a Gander here in NW Indiana. They all have similar signs exempting CCW.
