Has anyone here had any experience with Cabelas 1860, .44 Army and/or the 1861, .36 cal Navy? My grandson's looking at them and I don't want him to waste his money if they are not "decent" quality.
GUN TEST looked at them a few years back and gave them a very good review. Are they still made by Pietta of Italy?
Any and all comments appreciated.
Thanks,

Cabelas is mostly pietta, If it is Uberti they usually say so, and the price is somewhat higher. I think both are good quality, Uberti the better. Shoot Safe

Have both Cabela's 1860 Army .44 and the 1861 Navy .36 and both are Fratelli Pietta. More recent ones show some slightly different manufacturing techniques but the later ones are said to be better.
I also have a recent 1851 Navy from Cabela's which is also Pietta, and is very nice indeed; the even put the safety pins in the back of the cylinder now and they did not used to do that on the 1851.

I have two of Cabella's bp revolvers. A '51 Navy and '58 .44 Rem copy either one will shoot cloverleaf groups at 20 yards. Out of the box either would stay with any modern gun I own! Check it close on arrival and if it's not right send it back for one that is. Overall I'd likely rate the Uberti's just a cut higher than the Pietta's but in terms of shootability Pietta will give Uberti a run for its money!

I have an older 1851 Navy .36 and a slightly newer stainless 1858 Remington .44 revolver. Both made by Pietta, both from the early to late 1990's.

The Navy had problems from the box, but as it was a Christmas gift from my new wife, I repaired it. Won't go into repair details, but the revolver had timing and cylinder gap(huge gap/cylinder endplay!). I fixed the problems(I'm a fairly good gunsmith machinest) and it is a great shooting pistol now. Like dogrunner says, will shoot with a modern revolver.

The Remington stainless 1858 is a well made gun. Nicely fitted and timed, well regulated sights. If I would gripe about the Remington clone, would be that the grips are poorly fitted and finished.

While I wouldn't recomend the Colt Navy clone, I would Pietta's Stainless Remington clone.

I purchased a '51 Navy in the historically correct .36 caliber for my first black powder revolver from Cabela's. I did have to send my first one back due to some broken parts. However, the second one I received (promptly) was GREAT! It was a newer stock (had the pins between the cylinder chambers) and has performed flawlessly since I received it. Very accurate and points as naturally as if I was using my own finger. If you're buying from Cabelas, I'd highly recommend this revolver.
