Where I shoot, there is a calibre restriction of .270 or less. I am thinking of getting a gun for the fall deer hunt. Also I have never hunted before or used large CF rifles. And this rifle will also be used as varmint control (cyote). I do shoot 12ga slugs all the time though. What calibre would you choose for for this application? Also It cannot be ultra expensive... I go to university and $$$ is not the most plentyful.

Thanks

Well, why not .270? I don't hunt, but I hear that's a splendid cartridge for deer, comparable to 30-06.

You have a whole bunch of choices, depending on what style of hunting you plan to get into. The rifle type should weigh more on your list than the caliber. Anything from 243 on up to a 270WSM or Weatherby should do just fine. Have a friend who hunts white tail deer here in Texas with a 270 Weatherby and its a fine rifle indeed, although its way overpowered for what he is hunting. It really comes into its own on long range kills-over 400 yards.

Maybe a Sweed mauser in 6.5 Sweed? Good on deer, and great on varmint? Plus at about $200 US for the rifle, how could you go wrong?

Howdy, neighbour. I'm in London. The stupid law says .275 or less. Not that it matters. A .270 or a .243 will do you. If you're near K-W, pop into Shooter's Choice on Colby Dr in Waterloo, 1-800-257-7270. Or Goble's on Sovereign in London, 455-4277. Either one may have a used rifle in your price range or one of the 6.5 x 55, Swedish Mausers, Lochaber speaks of.
Anything in the .24, .25, .26(that'd be the 6.5) or .27 calibre range will do nicely. And please join us at http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/. Lots of local guys there.

I don't know about ammo prices in your area. But the .270, 6.5 Swede, .260 Rem (another 6.5mm), etc. should all be about the same price.

If you can begin reloading ammo, then they all become equally affordable, too. Are there any regs. regarding reloading in Canada?

.270 will easily do a deer assuming you do your part. Coyotes won't know what hit them. It's just a necked-down .30-06 if I remember right........ more than enough power.
