California and the xd

Hello all, finally after 7 months I am back online. While I was on deployment my friend and I were discussing firearms and he wants to buy a Springfield XD subcompact in 40 S&W. The question is is this gun legal to own in California??? I remember seeing something about a year ago that said the XD isn't California legal but I can't seem to find the artical. Any feedback would be greatly appriciated.
