First they restrict civilian gun ownership. Now this?

Gun laws a minefield for military

By GORDON DILLOW
The Orange County Register

As thousands of U.S. military personnel in California deploy to the Persian Gulf in preparation for war, some of them are having a serious problem.

They can't get guns.

Oh sure, the military provides them with an array of weapons: M-16s, grenade launchers, squad automatic weapons and so on. They're heavily armed.

But a lot of military types, particularly guys in special-operations units, like to supplement some of the standard-issue weaponry with privately purchased handguns and gun-related equipment of their own choosing. Often the handguns and equipment they can buy in the private market are better and more advanced than the standard-issue stuff.

But getting those handguns can be a big problem in California, which has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. Although law enforcement personnel are exempted from many of the restrictions on purchasing firearms, military personnel stationed in California are not - even if they're on their way to a combat zone.

"It's a sad state of affairs," says Evan Carolyn, a former Marine who owns Evan's Gunsmithing and Shooter's World in Orange. "There's no way for us to assist these guys in getting the best stuff they can."

For example, recently some members of a special-operations unit - I'm not supposed to say which unit - told Evan they wanted to buy some compact 9-millimeter handguns as personal backup weapons before they shipped out. Unfortunately, there's a 10-day waiting period for firearms purchases in California - and the unit had to leave before the waiting period was up.

And even if they had bought the handguns, they would have had to make do with 10-round magazines instead of the 13-round magazines the weapons are capable of holding. That's because California law bans the sale of "large capacity" magazines - more than 10 rounds - to anyone but police officers.

"We're seeing this kind of thing all the time," Evan says. "This is how we're treating the military in California."

Spokesmen for the state Attorney General's Office, which regulates firearms sales, told me they were aware of the problem involving military personnel and firearms restrictions - but there's not much they can do about it. Even if he wanted to, the attorney general can't waive any of the statutory restrictions on gun sales - not even for guys headed off to war.

And as for the state Legislature amending the gun laws to exempt military personnel under certain special circumstances - well, don't hold your breath. After all, they're the same guys who passed these silly, ineffective laws in the first place.

So that's the situation we have today in California. Apparently we trust our military personnel to handle tanks, machine guns, missiles, grenades, mortars, howitzers, aircraft carriers, submarines, jets, bombs and nuclear weapons. And after making them wait a week-and-a-half, we even trust them enough to let them buy a handgun that holds ten rounds.

But they'd better not ask for one that holds eleven.

Military weapons purchases

Just proves whose side the Lefty CA government is on.

Buy what you need early and often. And not in CA.

Sometimes ya have to laugh to keep from crying or, in this case SCREAMING!!!!!!!

But, between the CA Gov. and Atty. Gen, look who's running my state: Beavis & Butthead:banghead: I take that back: B&B LIKE to blow things up. Mm-Kay?:neener:
------------------
Yes, I'm over 50 and I really like Beavis & Butthead. There. I've said it. Too bad they took them off the air. At least the same guy who created them does "King of the Hill". I forget his name...well, I'm a senior citizen, what do you expect?

I really hate to see the soldiers being treated this way, and it seems odd they can even be allowed to carry their own sidearms-like who is going to stock necessary parts for them? I don't think they are going to find them at Habbib-Habbib and Habbib's gun and camel store? Is their armorer going to be able to help them?

Of course, being a civilian-I don't have access to those hi-caps magazines either, which does not put a :D on my face.
Unless GW has changed his position, he apparently has no problem with the assault weapons ban, nor the hi cap mag restrictions either. Maybe next time we can get yet closer to common sense:banghead:

Not a surprise. Liberals can't stand the military. It was military votes that cost them the election. (And they're STILL puling about it. ) Liberals aren't going to do them any favors, that's for sure.

Hey, this is Kaliforny, the biggest repository of anti-war and anti-American sentiment in the country. There's probably people who'd sabotage soldier's equipment if they could, and feel proud of themselves while they did it. After all, we have eco-terrorists don't we? Emotionally-driven thinking is self justifying and self-reinforcing. With enough iterations around the same irrational loop, the ends will always justify the means.

After all, "It's for the Children", right? Makes it all possible. :fire:

I wish we could round 'em up and put 'em in camps for the duration. 12' tall barbed wire, and guns that face IN.

My (not so) humble $0.02:

When the [Bad Guys of your choosing] come marching into Kali, maybe the military should 'thumb their noses' at Kali.....

Yeah, 'Red' Davis & Liar Lockyer.....now defend your Socialist Nanny State........IF you can

Gray Davis touts his military experience. He was a Captain in the Army in Vietnam. He got a Silver Star. I still can't find out for what. I guess all that hanging around Jerry Brown really screwed him up.

Davis and Lockyear are total anti-gun trash bags as is everyone in the Legislature out there with a (D) after their name. Ruined the State in 4 years. Now he has 4 more to finish bringing in Marxism and getting it running smoothly.

I saw this thread on another forum and thought it was BS. Military personnel are generally forbidden from carrying personally owned firearms. Even those forces which use non-standard weapons will have them provided by the military. There are also provisions in both Federal and California law for military personnel to purchase firearms for official use, although the military rarely, if ever, authorizes this.

Also, why would they wait until they were being deployed to purchase the weapons?

The PRK does not care about anybody who would defend this country. It only panders to non productive aliens who are a major drag on our broken down state! The liberal commies only care about people making more babies thus, move votes down the line for their party...

Larry

Yep. All them dang furriners who moved here and had babies and vote Liberal really messed it up for us 4th & 5th Generation Californians. We otta send 'em all back!!

'course iffin you folks in our other States don't want dem krazy liberals back, meebe you could chip in for Greyhound tickets to Singapore for alla them dang liberal furriners. I dunno iffin they can breath when those busses are under water crossing the Pacific Ocean....

One other thing, quit sending them folks here, 'cuz we don't want any more. Not unless they shoot; them we'll let stay here.

T. Roosevelt for President !!!

Well, we know that voluntary secession didn't work for the south- but could we try forced secession for PRK, NJ, MA?

:p

The military needs to pull out of California - lock, stock, and barrel. Leave 'em defenseless, just like they do to their own citizens (and now, the brave troops shipping off to defend our freedoms).

I would consider this state of affairs to be the result of treason against the United States of America.

They could exile all the liberals to the Channel Islands or even Catalina and then expel them from the Union. Too bad to ruin Catalina but it would be worth it. It wouldn't be hard to get them out of the U.S. since they are beyond the territorial limits. Isn't it 20 miles? Well Catalina is 27 and would hold a million of them!

Let mexico re-take California... It would make getting prescription drugs easier and cheaper for those of us in Washington and Oregon, and, it would remove the liberal electoral votes from future national elections.

California, meet France.

France, California.

Too bad they are only drifting toward each other at an inch or two per year.
