I'm looking forward to taking a trip to NYC at the end of next month, and just looking for some local advice on stuff to do while I'm there??

I want to do the typical tourist thing, but would appreciate other suggestions too??

One thing I'm interested in, is that I've heard that certain gun clubs in the US allow you to hire weapons for their firing ranges??? I'm interested in military arms and I'd love to try something like that... so I'd like to find out about any local clubs that may do this??

NYC has lots of stuff to see depending on your interests. I don't know about shooting clubs but I doubt it. Older weapons ? The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the finest arms and armour collections in the world. That's one of about 100 museums in the city. Then there's broadway and off broadway shows , restaurents of every type etc, etc, etc. Have fun.

If you were interested in such things, it's too bad your going to NYC.

If you were coming out here, I could turn you on to a guy who rents Thompson Subs for use in his range. Got a bunch of other guns for rent as well. ;)

NYC...

I agree with Mete - the Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the coolest Arms & Armour collection. They have some very nice firearms, including some very beautifully engraved colt Single Action Army's (Peacemakers). They also have all kinds of suits of Armor (european, japanese, etc.), swords, etc.

Also, the NYPD has a good museum in the city. I haven't been there, but if you search on the web, you can find out details. They have some famous firearms as well as unusual firearms there.

Also, Berettta Gallery (one of Beretta's retail luxury stores) is in NY (I think it's somewhere around 65th and Madison). Lots of really nice long guns and lots of really nice Beretta Pistols.

If you get a chance to venture out of the city, I suggest the United States Military Academy at West Point. It's probably about 30 or 40 minutes north west of the city. They have a nice museum with 3 floors of exhibitions on military technology and history. Lots of small arms there. The campus is beautiful, but since Sept 11th, you're no longer allowed on campus freely. Instead, you have to be part of a bus tour.

There are even some shooting ranges in NYC, but I imagine there incredibly expensive.

Enjoy NY. Actually, even though it's pretty gun unfriendly, it's not as bad as other big cities (San Francisco, Chicago, etc.).

More Info on NYCity

Dazbo - I just reread your post and saw that you'll be coming from the UK. If your interested in going to a shooting range and renting a firearm, I believe that there is at least one (perhaps two) ranges in the city that do this. It's probably pretty expensive, but if you're on vacation from Wales, it might be fun to try it out. I don't know the ranges offhand (I live north of the city) but I do have some friends who have attended parties in NY city. The parties were arranged by some event planning company. The attendees get to go to a shooting range in NY City and shoot handguns, and then they get to go to a nice restaurant afterwards for steaks. The whole event is billed "beef and bullets" (or something like that).

You might want to look up the ranges in the telephone book and call them to see if they rent firearms. If they don't you can always go to Pennsylvania. It's not too far from NY City (you can get to Philadelphia by train from Penn station) and the gun laws are less restrictive and there are lots of good ranges in Pennsylvania.

Enjoy your visit! good luck. Definitely check out West POint (www.usma.edu) while your in the States. If you're a military history buff, this is one place you'll want to visit.

Thanks for all the advice - I've definately got plenty to keep me busy there... Think I'll try and find out more about the museum(s) and West Point -

...and the "Beef & Bullets" event sounds like a GREAT idea if I can arrange the date !!! :D :D
