My son and I took out our 1968 vintage model 28-2 Highway patrolman and discovered it has a problem with the cylinder stop bolt, In single action it sticks in the down position. So we of course did not shoot it. I took it home and took off the sideplate expecting to see gunk, but the gun is pristine after taking off the mainspring and removing hammer I cannot see anthing causing this. a little pressure and it pops right up but seems to be catching on something ( doesn't appear to be the cylinder window) after single action hammer cocking in DA it doesn't stick. So I guess it could be a burr or the spring but the spring also seems fine. I have Kunhausen's shop manual. Revolver worked fine prior to this. I have many S&W revolvers and am familiar with their innards I have never seen this issue before. BTW the pin the bolt/stop rides on seems just fine.

Advice needed.

Thanks

Probably just gunk or dried oil in the bolt spring hole.

Hose it out good with WD-40 or something and try it again.

Check the spring to see that it's not slightly offset and binding. You should have free travel up and down with no hesitation......I think it's unlikely, but if there's a burr on the bolt you can lightly stone it...just don't thin the thing so that the cylinder engagement is sloppy.....

If it was fine before and suddenly it's giving issues then it must be something that happened in between then and now. Has it been dropped or "flushed" with a solvent or something?? Unless you took the side plate off things don't just happen for no reason.

It is easy to get that spring kinked when replacing the cylinder stop if the spring is not guided into place. Pull the stop and spring and check for a kinked spring. If it is OK, guide the spring into place using a small screwdriver, don't just force the stop in.

Issue is fixed a tiny bevel on the right side of the stop was needed as the very sharp top right edge was hanging up on the frame hole. Reassembled gun and fired 65 trouble free single action rounds at the club today.

thanks for the help

Glad to hear it is fixed, and a simple fix at that. Informative posts. Thanks.
