Came across a cheap used Mossberg

Looks like a Mossberg 500 security. It's not in bad shape as far as the metal, but the finish is GONE.

It was on a rack with a bunch of 1187s all done up, so I thought it may be a former police gun.
Aside from some sand paper or a wirewheel, how would the finish get like that? It's not rusting either.

So if I check out the bolt and action and it looks good,.think it's a good value? I've been looking for a cheap knock around shotgun. I figure I can just rattle can this one and if the internals are good then I'm good to go.

Someone could have stripped it and tried rebluing it or painting it, is it at least grey? Price really depends, but around 100 if its at a pawn shop they will probably budge a bit

It is grey, it's not bare metal but the shiny blueing is gone.

Put a hundred dollar bill on the counter and see if they'll take it. Then spray paint the metal matte black and shoot the snot out of it.

That was kind of my thought. This would be a back up/knock around gun. I don't care about the finish as long as that isn't indicative of the gun internals being worn out.

It would give me a chance to paint a gun which I haven't done.

I would say for $100 it's a decent buy if everything checks out okay from an operational standpoint. Lots of different things you can do to refinish it if you decide to go that route.

I don't know what they charge now, but two years ago Mossburg would reblue a barrel and ship back to you for $35.00.
