Can bolt action .22lr rifles fire shorts?

I heard lever action .22's tend to feed shorts more reliably than bolt actions. Is this true? I'm shopping for a bolt action .22 but want something that can handle shorts for when I need to keep noise levels down. I've narrowed my list of bolt rifles down to the Marlin 980 and the CZ 452. Will these handle shorts reliably? If not, are there other bolt actions that will?

Any bolt action that you can hand feed will handle shorts just fine.

They are very quiet from a bolt rifle.

There is no problem with shooting shorts in a .22 LR chamber (although if you do a lot of it, you want to clean the chamber before sooting .22 LRs again.)

In general, most tublar magazine .22s will feed shorts, longs and long rifles. Box magazines will not. So if your bolt action has a box magazine, you will probably have to single load your rifle -- but it will shoot shorts fine.

Lever 22's with tube magazines don't mind the shorts. That's because while feeding ,the cartridge is being grabbed by the rim and than pushed into the chamber.
You can feed one at a time into a bolt rifle but I wouldn't count on reliable feeding from stacked 22 lr magazine.

I second this, becuase I have done it, I've hand fed a semi-auto with shorts, it shoots fine.

Thanks for clearing that up. Feeding the shorts one at a time when necessary is no problem, just wanted to make sure they'd fire.

My Remington 581 feeds shorts reliably from the stacked box magazine...
It does quite well with shorts, longs, or long rifle rounds.....
For quiet applications I use CB longs or CB shorts.

BTW, it lists 22 s,l,lr on the barrel...

My .22LRs all feed even the Aguila Colibri rounds reliably. Now there's a fun round...nearly silent and quite accurate.

If you want noise reduction try subsonic 22 LR they are quieter than standard or hyper velocity 22

it is ejection that can be your problem; if you can find an oldermarlin such as a 25, or mod 80 or 81, they can do all 3, and are meant to do so, and eject just fine. plus with an 81 dl, you get a factory peep site, which will kick much !@#$ss, fire CCI short hollow points, into 1 hole at 50 yards, and you can put about 25 shorts in the tube at one time.
