If I wanted to load and use brass shells, just for fun, would there be a problem cycling them in a modern semi-auto like a Remington 1100 or 11-87?

And, would they be badly dented when ejecting?

Probably not gonna work.

The sharp edge on the case mouth would very likely cause feed problems.

Another factor would be the length of the brass casing - is it a full 2-3/4" or less like standard ammo? That would also be a cause for feeding issues.
If you were intending to use black powder, like many do with these, a gas gun would most likely not appreciate that as well

There is a difference in the length, but I don't recall what it was. Even so, in order to get them to feed in a semi auto you would need to invest in an rcbs cowboy (or similar) die so that you can roll crimp them.

The brass hulls are usually 2.5" instead of the more typical 2.75" This is because they're often used for older shotguns with the shorter 2.5" chamber. I would imagine you might have some problems in a semi-auto. They work fine in my Winchester 1897 pump, but that might not be the case for all pumps and occasionally they do feed rough even in that.
