Any reason why you couldn't put a longer barrel on an 870 Police model for the occasional skeet shoot?

I'd originally been thinking about getting a wingmaster and then a shorter barrel for it for HD, but the more I think about it the more I realized that it will live with the short barrel more than the long and I like the idea of the extra QC that goes into the police model.

Thoughts?

Extra QC in the police model?
Not that I've noticed.

Yes, you can interchange barrels.

Why not just get a 21" turkey model with interchangable choke tubes.
It will handle all your needs just fine.

What do you mean? As in I'd be okay shooting skeet with an 18" barrel?

Yes you can shoot skeet with an 18" bbl but you will find that you will make more consistant hits with a longer barrel because it will swing more smoothly. Shooting birds, either clay or feathered, the swing is where it is at.

all else being equal, Ive noticed tighter groups from longer barrels, not sure if the shot "settles" more in the wad, or the extra velocity makes it spread further down range. I shoot trap with my 870p, 26" barell, and modified or full rem choke. Just make sure the little spring loaded ball is in the face of the barrel ring on the trap barrel, as the new 870s use the face of the mag plug (and teeth inside the cap) to keep from loosening up.

I know of some ranges that will not allow you to shoot skeet or trap with anything less than a 20 inch barrel.
