I'm sure this has been covered before, but please one more time for me. I have a pietta 1858 Remy.
I am looking for the best capper to go with it.
I've tried several of the "Ted Cash" models as well as many others.
They all work wonderfully on my pietta 1860 colt, but leave much to be desired on the Remy.
I have found that both of my pistols seem to like #10 caps the best, but have yet to find a "capper" that works well with # 10s on my Remy.
any thoughts, good bad or ugly?????

I have three of the spring loaded stick cappers, they get the job done for my meager collection of iron. I would like a fancy Paterson capper some day.

I have cappers from ted cash and others. They all work well on rifles and my sxs shot gun, The revolvers, just my colt dragoon and 45cal ruger. I'm with you if anyone knows of a capper for a remmy I would buy it.

After shooting for a day with fumbling fingers to do the capping I realize I need to get one or two of these things as well. Need the ones that'll fit the Remmies.

The Ted Cash stick style one in this link specifically mentions fitting the Remington styles. Anyone used these? What about the second one in the list with the snail shell like style for the Remingtons?

I've never had any success with an off-the-shelf capper for a Remington, but I was able to modify one of the Ted Cash snail designs with a flat needle file so that it kinda worked. The trick was to file the piece that covers the caps while they're in the jaws so that it doesn't stick out beyond them. The 'kinda' part is that occasionally a cap or two gets loose and runs away. They're too small to shoot so I just let them go.

ive used the universal straight line capper on my 1858 it works but it is not very easy to load the capper, and it could be heavier made it bends a little if the caps fit tight.

I modified the Ted Cash straight line capper by grinding off the lips of the two springs that extend beyond the cap that is held between them. On the single spring cappers, I have ground off the lip of the spring and any of the brass that does not support the cap. I more or less rounded off the edges of the brass portion which slightly shortened the capper. This way both styles will fit deeper into the nipple cutout to allow placement of the cap on the nipple. Forget the snail style or any all brass cappers for the Remingtons. The lips are too thick to fit the narrow approach to the nipples.

An alternative approach is to mill out the nipple cutouts like they appear in the Colt revolvers which widens the space for any of the cappers to fit including the snail.

mykeal, bejay, and Hellgate I've all been thinking as yawl have and are. Hmmmmmmmm maybe this could be my "better mouse trap". smiles, thanks all

Hellgate, Very good idea on the grinding. I'll give it a try.

We sure learn alot from you senior members.

THANKYOU.........

I found myself in a model railroad hobby shop yesterday looking for red optic fiber for one of my modern junk guns. As a hobbyist myself I stopped to pick up some K&S brass tubing to replenish my dwindling stock. I also pickedup some sizes of square tubing with a mind to make up a capper or three.

So.. out I went today to check the tubing I bought with the caps and the spare Remington cylinder. NOW I see the issue. They milled cylindrical recesses for the nipples that pinch at the side openings rather than milling an open U shape.

The good news is that I have a solution. The bad news is that you're going to have to buy them from ME at an exorbitent profit margin

Pics of the prototype to be posted later this coming weekend or early next week. Got a motorcycle track day I'm riding in on Friday as well as a Speed Steel shoot on Saturday so work on the capper(s) will have to wait. Who said retirement has to be boring... :D

BCRider you might be suprisied how much we are willing to pay, it would sure beat the frustration of the ones we're using now.

Man, do i appreciate this thread

I bought one of each of the cappers to see which would fit a Remmy-
The pistol is at the smiths having it tuned right now.
This thread saves me some time as after reading it I can let the smith know to open up the nipples recess to fit both types-

Truthfully the gap is a close but "not quite" fit for the basic cheaper and thin ended capper. With a bit of care a resourceful and handy fella could remove the nipples and use a small fine cut file to open up the existing gap on the Uberti. But that opens up the need to touch up the blueing. Also for an orginal this should NOT be contemplated for obvious reasons. I'm not sure about the Pietta versions but I'm assuming they are much the same.

Not to toot my own horn but if my solution works out you won't need to deface your guns in any way.

The odd thing is that since I gather this is a regular Remington issue I can't believe that there isn't a solution other than machining the guns out there already.

BCRider, I've had the same thoughts, I've have a Pietta, but the blueing is so perfect I don't want to mess with it. ( my pietta colt 1860 I finished from a kit from DGW, is bare and polished steel, It's often mistaken for stainless). I'm just hoping that with the collective "know- how" here maybe, just maybe one of us has something "quick, easy, and cheap"................. well I can dream.

I'm not recommending it but it will work.

That Playful Pink holder extends the caps out to where it would work very nicely on the Remington clones. My only issue would be the need to still fumble the caps out and push them into the holder on a far too frequent basis. But still, it sure beats fumbling them onto the nipples by hand like I did the other day. I had to start capping three contestants before it was my turn to be sure I'd not keep the group waiting.
