I have one in 6.5. Today I was at Barnes and Noble and read an article in a gun book that stated these carbines were made for training and were not designed to shoot regular ammo.

I have not shot the gun, but I do have some ammo.

Can anyone confirm or deny that these carbines are not safe to shoot with regular ammo?

With out pictures I don't know what you have, however the Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is a real gun, nothing training about it. The Italian Youth rifle is also a firing firearm. I don't believe the Italians used non firing training firearms? ( The Standard Catalog of Military Firearms }

Thank's for all the replies. I'm not familiar with the Carcanos.
Are they decent guns? I never see anything about them on THR.

There is such a thing as a blank firing youth rifle on the Carcano pattern. It is recognizeable by its tiny size with 14" barrel meant for its own blank rounds.

I doubt you would confuse one with a Model 38.

Thanks to all. Am I correct in stating that I have a model 38? I've done some rearsch on the internet, but there is not a whole lot out there.

A lot of information here<http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewforum.php?f=22> or <http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/index.php>

Here is a pic of my cavalry carbine, which had it's folding bayonet removed years ago. It is one of the slickest operating bolt guns I have ever fired.

Year ago when they were being sold here years ago there were problems with these rifles, which the personnel at the local rifle range in Fox Valley, Illinois assured me was due to faulty military ammo and they showed me a fired case that had a small hole blasted through the extraction groove. Makes sense in that no one would design and build a rifle with an unsafe design or poor manufacture if they could help it. Remember according to the Warren Commission this is the rifle that fired the magic bullets that killed JFK and wounded the governor of texas in 1963. When I was last involved in discussion of that the moderators kill edthat thread. So it must a pretty good rifle. Not really sure if the Italians had much in the way of Calvary.
