I wasn't sure where to put this so Mod. feel free to move if there is a better place for it.

With winter coming I am thinking about possibly taking a vacation down to the Caribbean some time. Ive been there before and really like it. I was wondering if anyone has ever gone down there and done any sport shooting or hunting. Ive heard and read a lot about hunting in Cuba, but that wont be possible, but if they have good shooting, their more friendly neighbors must have something similar. Do any of you have firsthand experience in this or know anyone who has done something similar? Thanks

Most places in the Caribbean have extremely onerous regulation, and most have banned gun ownership or hunting. For example, it is illegal to even possess a cartridge of loaded ammunition in Jamaica, all hunting or sport shooting is banned in the Dominican Republic, and for many of the former or current British possessions, forget it.

Yet all these places have relatively high crime... Nah, there is no relation.

There was a time a few years ago when I seriously considered moving to Trinidad. My fiancee is from there, I've been there on vacation...long story. Anyhow, I found through my research that it's pretty much impossible to get a firearm. Trinidad/Tobago has a horrendous murder rate, among other forms of violence. People mostly hack each other with machetes. Police there have guns. As you can guess, the police are VERY corrupt.

We went to Jamaica on our honeymoon, and that convinced me I'm never crossing over a US border again.

Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic - 200 stations of sporting clays, live box pigeons, quail hunting, golf, polo, etc

Worth the trip from what my friends have said

Or go to Argentina and shoot dove - unlimited, gun rentals available

^ Yes

Gun laws in most of the world make Chicago look nice. The Caribbean nations have gun laws that are like Japan or have outright bans.

Not true for all of the islands, but many have restrictions for those who are not citizens. Puerto Rico, USVI, Bahamas, Dominican Republic all allow some form of gun ownership, even carry.

Many of the smaller islands have virtually no crime (outside of the typical pick-pocketing of tourists), so they see no need. They are typically small in land area as well, so many do not have the space - they make more money from tourists coming for the coral reefs, jungles, etc.

There are several gun clubs/facilities in Puerto Rico, along with Casa De Campo I mentioned earlier

Have fun!

Besides the club in the DR, PR has a number of ranges. St. Croix has 2, D&J Shooting Gallery is a 25 yard indoor range and has rental guns available.
Forget bringing your own guns, unless you are part of an organized competition.

If you read the USVI's firearms code, there is a paragraph that clearly states that they recognize permits to carry from other juridictions. I talked to an AAG about it. He admited it but said you'd probably get arrested anyway. (and have the charges dismissed. Local PD don't know the law...)

All the sport shooting I ever did in the islands involved a speargun.Much more agreeable with the local gendarmes. If you go to the Bahamas, however, you must use a pole spear or a Hawaiian sling. No spearguns allowed.
